A soft application of pigment build up is required before using a clean paintbrush absorbed with a small amount of pencil blend. After having used the blender pen over a piece of art, when tilting the artwork and allowing the light hit the image at a certain angle, you can see where you applied every mark as it shows as a sheen over the top. This is where the white pencil can also come in useful as it allows you to create new colours by applying white over the top. The colourless Blender allows you to apply layers of colour, enhancing the intensity of coloured pencils.

With a proud heritage dating back to 1832; we have been creating pencils in the Lake District, UK, ever since. We will use your data to personalise and improve your experience on our digital platforms and to send you relevant products and offers we think you'll love. The burnisher creates a polished finish and is particularly good for adding a sheen to drawings that include glass, metal and light reflections. I t is non-toxic, non-flammable and inherently biodegradable - a safer solution for use in the studio and home. The Blender pencil is a soft colourless pencil that allows you to blend two or more colours together to create a new colour.Applying all the dark tones before blending them together with a lighter coloured pencil such as the white option will create the very colour you were hoping to achieve. As it evaporates, it has no detrimental effect on the lightfastness of the pigments used in the pencils. The Prismacolor blender may indent the paper slightly, depending how much pressure you apply and it may feel 'scratchy' when using other brands of pencil. Like the blender, it does not change your colours, but creates a sheen which can be seen at an angle or when a light source hits the burnished area. This soft colourless pencil blends colours on the page to create new hues, and can also be used to smoothen pencil strokes so individual lines and hard edges appear softer.

If you want to create a subtle blend of colours then the Derwent Blender pencil is the ideal accessory. Apply the blender once you have placed all your colours as it may be harder to apply additional colours as the blender acts as a sealant, however you can get around this by applying a spray fixative over the top if you do wish to add further layers. Designed for use with pencils, these Blender pens enable the artist to blend away pencil lines, creating smooth and even colour. Having trialled out an Amur Leopard eye on the UArt Dark paper recently I thought I would see how the Blender Pen would help to improve this drawing and I decided to use it over 4 different areas - those marked with a star on the 'after' image (as well as the eye) The brilliant thing about this pen is that it works brilliantly as a 'base smoother' the layers of loose pencil that are applied can then be thickened up with the blender pen, once it has fully dried, further layers can be applied over the top which appear much finer and offer more effect than before. When applying over the Polychromos oil based pencils, it seemed to lighten the colours, maybe even break some of the pigment down and for this reason I would not recommend them for these pencils, although it may be better to try a sample first.

The Derwent Burnisher is a hard colourless pencil which when used over layers of pigment provides a rich polished finish. These pencils are very soft, with bold pigments and this is the reason why blending is so effective in this instance.

When working on a textured paper, there are peaks and dips that need to be filled with the pigment to create a smooth finish. This great set contains two burnishers, and two colourless blenders, as well as an eraser and pencil sharpener. Compact, sturdy eraser which can be used to erase very small areas on artwork or to create patterns and shapes. It does soften pencil lines a little, but you can see from the image above that it is not really notable, especially next to the blender. Next to the other blenders covered on this page, it does feel quite dry and can produce small amounts of dust on your paper as you blend, but it appears to be more effective than the other pencil blenders. Available individually or in a blister containing 2 of each of the blender and burnisher pencils, plus an eraser and sharpener. Whilst it blends colours on the page to create new colours, it also smoothes pencil strokes so individual lines and hard edges appear softer. When blending with the pen, It makes the colour much more vibrant which is wonderful but it means you will need to constantly clean the tip of the pen on a sheet of clean paper to avoid dirtying or mixing colours together.

It can work with coloured pencils as long as you indent the paper and apply your colour by gently building it up, careful not to push it into the outline. Gently build up each colour tone so that they can be 'sealed' or blended with the white or the Pink White. Derwent has been awarded PEFC Chain of Custody certification to demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable future for the world’s forests, providing assurances that Derwent procures pencil slats from sustainable, legal and traceable sources. Performs best with oil-based colored pencils but it can be used with wax-based pencils as well, when pretreating the surface for subsequent pencil application. If you want to create a subtle blend of colours then the Derwent Blender pencil is exactly what you need. It is ideal for blending fine detail but if working on larger areas, use the Full blender by Caran d'Ache as it covers faster. The Derwent blender pencil is the ideal tool for when you want to create subtle blends of colours in your artwork. Although a toothy paper can help the blending process better than a smooth paper, it simply was not possible to achieve the same smooth transitions that was possible with the powder and the patchiness of blending is notable.
