As a Bowie fan from 1969, and having seen him in concert in 1973, I really enjoyed this film,went to see it at the cinema in September 2022. Rounding out the package is a live performance of “Rock ‘n Roll with Me” from 1974, a theatrical trailer, and a thoughtful essay by critic Jonathan Romney.

Working in cooperation with the estate, Morgen was granted access to an archive of five million different items, including paintings, drawings, recordings, photographs, films, and journals.It’s a fairly dry track, with little of the enthusiasm of the film coming through in Morgen’s voice, but it’s still an informative track for anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of the film’s making. Though he would later retract such statements, their exclusion from the film suggests a timidity about peering into the darker corners of Bowie’s history that robs us of a deeper, more complex, and well-rounded portrait.

Bowie is pictured in many clips from his glam rock years wearing heavily costumed outfits often experimenting with the signature transgender dressing associated with his early years.

Moonage Daydream weaves in more familiar footage—interview segments and clips from his stage and film performances—with previously unseen concert performances, alternate takes of songs, and other such archival material. And I am glad that I saw it again … hence this time I saw it as a whole and not in bits and pieces with certain pieces missing … and me saying, “why was this not included, etc, etc”.
