Description

The Inspiron's SSD duplicated 25GB of test files at a rate of 404.86MBps, which is about half as fast as the Dell XPS 13 2-in1’s 806.24 MBps. The Asus Zenbook and Yoga 9i completely blew these two out of the water at over 1,500MBps each. Storage performance as measured by PCMark 8 proved roughly equal across the Latitude 7420 and its competitors, since they all use speedy SSDs as their boot drives. Even the previous ones, only the higher-end i7 version has it. But this year, nothing even for the i7 version. And the AMD version uses the older Ryzen 5000 series because the newer 6000 requires DDR5. There's not much software preinstalled on Dell's 2-in-1. I didn’t even find the usual Windows 11 bloatware I’m used to seeing on new devices. I did find some Dell software of varied usefulness, though. Dell Customer Connect delivers surveys, and My Dell allows users to register their system for the warranty or find their Dell Service tag. Lastly, there’s Dell’s SupportAssist app, which provides automated support and assists customers with their device.

It is also worth mentioning that Dell offers the Latitude 14 7420 in both Carbon and Aluminum outfits, both of which feel premium enough. I'm also including the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, a 2-in-1 that competes with the convertible version of the Latitude 7420. Finally, since our Latitude is a clamshell laptop without a touch screen, a comparison with the 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro is also useful. Many corporate users covet Mac laptops, too. The Dell XPS display leads in brightness with an impressive 469 nits. The OLED displays of the Yoga 9i and Asus Zenbook aren't that far behind at 352 and 321 nits, respectively. The Inspiron 14 had the least amount of brightness at 251.4 nits. The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is a device you will use on your lap or, at the very least, hold in your hands in tablet mode, which means good heat management is crucial. During our Cinebench stress test, the touchpad was the coolest area at 86.72 degrees Fahrenheit. At the center of the keyboard, between the G and H keys, the laptop reached 106.7 degrees. The underside of the Inspiron hit temperatures of 118.22 degrees Fahrenheit and was the hottest area of the laptop. Overall, the Inspiron can get pretty warm under intense workloads. While I was running Cinebench, the Inspiron was hot to the touch, especially around the keyboard, the closer the keys got to the vent under the display. Webcam on the Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 (7420) Intel’s 12th Generation processors certainly acquitted themselves well, especially in multi-threaded tests, such as Cinebench R23 and Geekbench 5.4.1 Pro, where the Inspiron and the Yoga topped all others. The extra cores helped there. Productivity TestsThe advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List. We strongly recommend springing for the upgraded 4-cell, 63-watt-hour battery in our review unit, since the base model comes with a 3-cell, 42-watt-hour battery that likely won't last as long. Overall, even to the naked eye, colors seem somewhat faded, and both brightness and saturation could use a boost. Working in a bright environment would be challenging. Subjectively, the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 appears best with the display set at 85% to 100% brightness, in a modestly lit kitchen nook. In the same room, the Inspiron 16 2-in-1 only needs the level set to 50% to 60% to achieve the same effect. In fact, adjusting a photo on each unit to the same size (compensating for the 16-inch display’s size advantage), a scene of trees on a sunny day appeared brighter and with richer colors on the 16-inch unit, probably because the Inspiron 16 is capable of displaying 96% of the sRGB gamut to the Inspiron 14’s 64%. Health-Guard eliminates the harmful Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) and reduces the negative Blue Light which affects our eyes and body. Since it’s custom tailored for every panel, it manages to keep the colors perceptually accurate. Health-Guard simulates paper so the pressure on the eyes is greatly reduced.

Ports & Slots

The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 is the first laptop we’ve tested with an Intel 12th Gen U-series processor. The convertible specifically uses an i7-1225U with ten cores (two performance cores and eight efficiency cores) and 12 threads. The Inspiron 14 also sports 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD. Standard wireless connectivity comprises an Intel Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) chipset with built-in 2x2 MIMO support and Bluetooth 5.1. The Latitude 7420 supports eSIM, so if you opt for the optional mobile broadband and your carrier supports eSIM as well, you won't need to use the physical slot. First responders and public safety organizations eyeing the Latitude 7420 may appreciate that the LTE version supports the dedicated, high-capacity FirstNet LTE bands.
