Description

Designed specifically for multimedia files, Synology Photossimplifies organization with automatic sorting capabilities. Secure sharing options make it easy to enjoy digital memories with family and friends, while support for RAW file formats supports professional creative work.

Usable capacity for each volume will be lower than the maximum volume size and is dependent on the filesystem and the amount of system metadata stored. Power consumption is measured when it is fully loaded with Western Digital 1TB WD10EFRX hard drive(s).If you have been looking at Synology or a more cost-effective, low-price and highly power-efficient NAS drive in 2022/2023, then there is a very good chance that you have been wondering about the release of the DS223j, as the current value series offering of the DS220j has been available now for well over two years and looking a little old now. Well, I am pleased to share that I have been informed that Synology has plans to release the newest entry into their budget/cost-effective tier with this new 2-Bay NAS in the last quarter of 2022 (or possibly the start of 2023). This little snippet of information (alongside mention of other new desktop NAS’, such as the DS223, DS223+, DS723+ and DS923+), details which units are going to form the bulk of the brand’s home-prosumer-SMB diskstation portfolio. The DS2xxj series has always been highly desirable as the entry point for most first-time Synology NAS users and although is a solution that arrives with hardware that could arguably be called ‘economical’, it is worth also remembering that it will almost certainly arrive with support of DSM 7 – so you are going to be looking at an affordably jumping off point into a complete hardware+software solution. Although the details we have on the DS223j are incredibly thin on the ground at the time of writing, this information DOES come from a very trustworthy source that I am sorry to say I cannot share. I am sure this will result in many having doubts about the reliability of this information (I would feel the same), but you are just going to have to trust me on this and/or wait out the rest of 2022 as this all plays out. Let’s discuss the DS223j a little further. Synololgy NAS servers: DS723+ | DS923+ | DS1522+ | DS1621+ | DS1821+ | DS620slim | DS220+ | DS1019+ | DS419slim | DS1618+ | DS218 + If you’ve been considering a Synology NAS because you want to own your very own private cloud for your data and not rely on public cloud spaces such as Google Drive or Dropbox, the Synology DS223J is one of the most low-impact 2-bay NAS that the brand has ever produced. With reported power consumption at 16 watts active and 4 watts idle, this is barely going to register on your electricity bill annually. Moreover, thanks to the compact plastic chassis, rubberized feet, and discreet ventilation, the system is also going to run exceptionally quiet unless you choose to install particularly aggressive or enterprise-grade hard drives. So, in short, if you are looking at a NAS that has a tiny impact o your network, environment, the DS223j is confirmed to support: Should I buy an SSD for the drive slot number one {1ssd &5hdd}? My assumption is that will help with performance because the system will utilize that drive slot for the OS.

The testing standard was based on the maximum number of concurrent connections supported by this model. During the testing, 25% of the connections were used to transfer files concurrently. The transfer process guaranteed that the connections were not interrupted; the minimum transfer speed was not guaranteed. Our first throughput test measures 4K random performance of the DS223j. The write performance was about the same for SMB and iSCSI, but iSCSI has a substantial edge in reads, topping out near 500 IOPS.

For standard deviation, the DS223j recorded 79.58ms read and 121.42ms write in SMB, and 2,119.52ms read and 282.06ms write in iSCSI with our RAID6 config. Because of this, if you are considering a NAS for houseboats, mobile homes, and RVs, or simply to have a NAS that can largely be set up and forgotten with the lowest footprint possible, the DS223J is a fantastic example of this. Synology DS223j 2-bay NAS

As good as it is that the Synology DS223J arrives with twice the memory of its predecessor, the DS220J, it is still going to be something of a disappointment to hear that you cannot upgrade this memory beyond one gigabyte later on. A lot of Synology NAS systems that arrive with Intel or AMD processors allow you to add further memory to the system later on and improve its performance in handling multiple tasks. However, the ARM-based processor in the DS223J is designed to be as efficient as possible, and one of the ways to improve memory efficiency is by directly soldering the memory to the PCB motherboard of the NAS. Consequently, you are not able to upgrade the memory and the minute you start to grow the number of simultaneous operations and user activities, that one gigabyte of memory is going to feel particularly limiting. Only 1x 1GbE Network Port on the DS233j, and no means to upgrade it applies to files indexed or hosted by Synology Drive. For file access through other standard protocols, refer to the File Services section above) The option to integrate the DS223 with popular cloud storage services, including Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive, enables users to sync files to and from the cloud, delivering true data centralization and data ownership. If you are looking for a user-friendly and intuitive private server ownership without having to grapple with the command line or a high learning curve, the DS223J is an excellent example of this and at this price point, it will easily pay for itself when you compare it to the monthly subscription cost for cloud services in just a couple of years by comparison. The DS223j NAS has Twice the Memory of the DS220j

Maximum IP cameras and FPS figures are tested with the device fully populated with drives and under a continuous recording setup. For standard deviation latency, SMB was the better-performing protocol again with the DS223j, posting a range of 7.36ms to 95ms while hitting 24.5ms to 578ms for iSCSI. I wanted to buy the DS220j or DS120j because it has the Low-Power Fan Speed Mode. Because my Synology device would mostly idle around, my hope would be that the fan would mostly be turned off. I have already switched the annoying fan of the DS216+ with silent Noctua Fan, but I would like it to be mostly off. My Raspberry Pi runs fine without fans, why shouldn’t my NAS run fine without a fan too. The fan of the DS920+ was really loud and the power consumption was way too high. It was way more powerful than what I needed. So i got my DS223j yesterday and got it all setup. I installed practically half of their DSM applications while transferring data and indexing and updating and playing a video through video station. I was trying to see if i could break it haha. Well long story short it worked flawlessly even while doing many things at once. In fact it never went above 71% memory usage. I dont feel so far that ram is going to be an issue for this machine its going to be the CPU when indexing, in particular indexing videos for video station that process will make the CPU go to 95%. While its doing that my memory usage was only like 41%. Update (28/09/22 UK) – The CPU that will be featured in the Synology DS223j, DS123 and DS223 will be the Realtek RTD1619. The articles have been updated. The release date is looking like Q1 (Jan-March) 2023.

Private cloud made easy

Below is the rest of the original article from 18/07/22. What Do We Know About the Synology DS223j 2-Bay NAS Drive? A notable aspect of the new Synology DS223J is its memory. Unlike its predecessor which launched with 512MB of memory, this new device arrives with 1GB of DDR4 memory. This memory is soldered onto the board, is non-ECC, and cannot be upgraded. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see Synology upgrading the base memory level on these devices as DSM 7.2 continues to expand its feature set. Synology rarely offers upgradeable memory on their value and entry-level devices, so it’s not surprising that the 1GB base memory cannot be further expanded. Compatible drive type” indicates drives that have been tested to be compatible with Synology products. This term does not indicate the maximum connection speed of each drive bay. Client performance may affect maximum simultaneous editing users. Client PCs used for testing: Intel Core i3-3220 / 8GB RAM Synology reserves the right to replace memory modules with the same or higher frequency based on supplier’s product life cycle status. Rest assured that the compatibility and stability have been strictly verified with the same benchmark to ensure identical performance.
