He was also the chairman for several years of the Street Lighting Association. His role including attending regular meetings to standardise street lighting installations across the UK and, in addition he was also responsible for winning the contract to provide street lighting for a good stretch of the A1 – the longest numbered road in the UK, connecting London and Edinburgh. The family of Gerry Parker have gathered to remember the "people person" who turned his father's business WT Parker into a massive success, opening three shops and satellite offices across the country. The company opened several satellite offices, to include Watton, which remained in the same area covering bases in the Norfolk area for many years. His son Tom Parker and stepson Paul Harrison said in a family statement: "Gerry was definitely a people person, he would always listen to people. As a manager he was keen to take on board what people had to say, and their suggestions and ideas. However if someone stepped out of line, he would leave that person in no doubt he was not happy!
