I cranked the UL60 up to maximum, 100% brightness, then progressively moved further away from the light until my skin tone hit 55% IRE on the monitor’s waveform. (FYI, 55% is what works best for me and my skin tone when exposing C-Log). In this test, I was able to stand ten feet away before my skin tone dropped below 55%. It’s aluminum construction body is robust and feels well made. Unlike cheaper lights I was surprised that the Fan produces almost no noise. For those serious about videos for YouTube will love the low sound pollution this light box produces as the fans can get loud and negatively impact your videos sound. While taking the look of a monobloc, the Godox SL60W is actually smaller than a typical studio flash head. It still weighs in at a hefty 1.6kg. First impressions of this light in the box were that it was a little smaller than I expected and that although it looked plastic, it looked well made.

LED lights can be a great way to get started with off-camera lighting in photography. What you see is what you get, so it’s easy to understand how the light changes as you move it around and use different modifiers. What’s important to remember is that the brightness of the LED will have an effect on shutter speed that’s available to you. A continuous 60w LED like the SL-60 is nowhere near as bright as a regular hot shoe flash, let alone a larger monolight. By placing a shoothru umbrella on the light, you’ll get a softer light, but at the expense of lower power. This is because you tend to lose about two-stops of light when using any kind of diffuser modifier.

In addition to continuous light, the UL60 also supports a few special effects including flash, storm, television and broken bulb. These effects strobe and animate the light, but without changing its color. Is 60 watts enough? Of course, I’m testing the SL-60 light here, the cheapest of the Godox COB range. But the light is also available in three additional variations with more power: SL-100, SL-150 and SL-200. The design of the more powerful lights is nearly identical, but each one gets a little longer to accommodate a larger power supply and more cooling. If you get to the end of this review and like the look of the product, but wish it was more powerful, you have those options.

I had originally planned for the light to be a simple, cheap stop-gap in my studio until I could assign the budget for a larger light from a bigger brand. Honestly, I don’t think I need to do that anymore, I’m perfectly happy with the Godox light and it more than meets my needs as a key light for some Youtube videos. For that, Godox also sells the UL150. This light is the same as the UL60, but outputs 150 watts of light. The UL150 is also passively cooled and completely silent just like the UL60. Downsides of the Godox UL60The first and foremost thought about using the SL60W is that what you see is quite literally what you get. No guessing or external metering required. Your in-camera meter will give an accurate reading and those on mirrorless with preview simulation on will see the shot in-camera before shooting (same for Live View users with Exposure Simulation on).

There’s a lot to like with the Godox UL60, but it does have a few shortcomings. No padded carrying case Godox UL60: Only comes with a box, no carrying case These results will be different depending on the type of camera and lens you’re using. But if you’re not a technical person, just know that you should be able to achieve proper exposure with your subject when positioned somewhere around 5-10 feet away.
