There are also breed rescues that rehome dogs of their chosen breed. However, they rarely have puppies. I had already gotten another dog from this great breeder. I wanted a dog who was a companion but who I also wanted to show in competitive obedience. Also, what you see on the screen is not what you’ll get as your puppy. The dogs in shows have been highly trained and specially selected for their jobs.

There are so many wonderful training and behavior books available, such as those by Jean Donaldson, Pat Miller, Turid Rugaas, Alexandra Semyonova, Leslie McDevitt, Sophia Yin, Karen Pryor, Susan Garrett, Suzanne Clothier, Ian Dunbar, and other. Cesar's books, unfortunately, aren't among them -- in fact, they rightfully belong in the "true crime" section of the bookstore, because what he does to dogs (and to clueless consumers, whose money he's raking in) can only be called criminal.Cesar Millan is a best-selling author, public speaker, and the internationally acclaimed star of “Cesar 911,” as well as the original, Emmy-nominated host of the “Dog Whisperer” program. With “Cesar 911,” he brings more than 25 years of dog experience and his status as the most recognized and sought-after authority in the field of dog care and rehabilitation directly to communities terrorized by unruly hounds. Toy breeds were generally bred as amiable companions. They may make great lap dogs and have big personalities despite their small stature. How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond

All dogs are friendly if socialized from an early age. That said, some breeds are known for their love of all people. Some of these breeds with particularly outgoing personalities include: the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Poodle (whether Standard or Toy), Beagle, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. If you are bringing home a very young pup (i.e. <12 weeks of age) and want to get a better sense of its sociability, you should spend some time with its parents, as pups often inherit their parents' temperaments. If the puppy is older (i.e. 4-6 months old), you can likely observe its social aptitude firsthand by spending time with the puppy. What Is a Good Breed for a First Time Owner? Having 2 cute dogs at home, along with a sweet-loving-wife who watches ‘The Dog Whisperer’ almost everyday with total excitement and yes, a full-blast volume (with me covering my ears thanks to my over-priced ear-phones while on my PC), I just had to read a few instructions from the world’s best and most famous Dog Trainer – Cesar Millan. Bring a clean towel from home and rub the mother dog and a couple of litter mates with it. Wrap your pup in this familiar scent to ease his transition to a new home. When you walk through the front door for the first time with your pup, take a minute to acquaint him with his new surroundings. Let him explore the house, sniffing as he goes along. Sit with him quietly, providing lots of hugs. Then try a little playtime to further cement your new bond. Take him on a walk to show him where he will eliminate or introduce him to potty pads. "If you and your veterinarian think it best to change foods or alter feeding schedule, do so gradually.”I found some of the general advice in this book helpful. However, it wasn't quite what I expected. The idea of following actual dogs through their puppyhood is a great idea and seems promising--until you find out that all the puppies are from top-notch breeders and perfectly fit Millan's "calm-submissive" ideal. I know MY puppy certainly does not meet that ideal, nor is she from any sort of top-notch breeder, so it made a lot of the puppy-specific stories kind of useless. This book would be more helpful to read if you're in the process of getting a puppy and want to know what you should take into consideration. These can really add up. You may decide not to get pet health insurance and not need pet walkers or doggie daycare, but expenses can really add up over the years. Do You Have Children? Some goodm mentions with crate training, toys, how to play, how to train, go for walks, stop barking, socialize dog to humans and animals, etc.
