Description

The one downside of the ES600s, especially compared to the now-almost unobtainable A600 pedals they replaced, is that they hang at an angle that makes entry a bit awkward compared to dual-sided SPDs and even compared to single-sided SPD-SLs. Shimano has slid these pedals into its GRX gravel groupset line-up, but the single-sided toe-first aspect might get annoying if you ride terrain that requires frequent clipping in and out through technical sections.

As we said in the pricing part of the review, brand is a really important consideration, but especially so when looking to buy Pedals. But as you’re probably already aware, you’re on to a great choice if you do go with Shimano, as they’re a fantastic brand, making amazing products. Three-bolt clipless pedals are single-sided, with one exception that we'll get to shortly. To get into them you have to catch the front tip of the pedal with the cleat. This is a bit fiddly at first, but becomes second nature after a bit of practice. Each ES600 has one set of cleat jaws sitting proud of what looks like a small version of a 'normal' road pedal. The flat platforms either side of the pedal are there to offer a level of support to the tread on the bottom of your recessed cleat shoes, and it's something they do pretty well. You could easily use these pedals for other types of riding too, of course. Many people like SPDs and shoes with recessed cleats for commuting and other urban use, and these would be well up to the job.Eggbeaters are around the same price as the ES600, but marginally heavier and more expensive. Unreliable, expensive to maintain and the cleats are proprietary... i wouldn't buy them. I thought so as well. Where did I not say that its OK for you to like them, continue to use them or advocate their use? I've tried them over a relatively extended period and I think they are shit in comparison to other options. I've tried other pedals that I think are better to way better than the speedplay. I expressed that view on the forum, which is how this all began. You use them and you think they are great for reasons that you explained. So do others, and that's OK as well. Went for the T8000s over the EH500 as they seemed slightly nicer and with a bigger platform to stand on. Similarly you’ll also want to spend some time looking at the features too. Again the table above, listing the features will give you a really good overview. However you should think about the sort of features that you’d expect when buying new Pedals. It’s worth writing a list of the “must-have” features so that you don’t end up compromising and missing some important features, or alternatively end up buying an unnecessarily high specced product.
