It's been a few years since I read one of Grafton's books. I read R is for Ricochet when it came out, then nothing till last week. If the noun is written in quotation marks (e.g., the name of a short story or a song), the combination of quotation marks and apostrophe is hard to read and should be avoided. Form the possessive in a different way, such as by using “of,” in these cases. Some nouns are irregular in English and do not end in s like children, men, and women. For these examples, we add an apostrophe s to show possession. Arabic: genitive construction is used - the thing owned is followed by the owner in the genitive case - ( إضافَة‎ iḍāfa)

archaic Greek Sigma could be written with different numbers of angles and strokes. Besides the classical form with four strokes ( ), a three-stroke form resembling an angular Latin S ( ) was commonly found, and was particularly characteristic of some mainland Greek varieties including Attic and several "red" alphabets. The main rule is that you should place an apostrophe before an s for a singular noun to show possession and use an s after an apostrophe when the noun is plural and ends in s. In English and several other languages, primarily Western Romance ones like Spanish and French, final ⟨s⟩ is the usual mark of plural nouns. It is the regular ending of English third person present tense verbs. Kinsey continues to turn up more of Violet’s lovers including Jake Ottweiler who had an affair with Violet while his young wife lay dying from cancer in the local hospital. There is also Tom Padgett, a not so successful businessman, who at the time was struggling in his construction business. He had married an older woman who inherited money from her first husband but refused to sink the money into her second husband’s business. Tom was getting desperate as bills mounted and the business required a strong infusion of cash to survive.

It is important to note that mens’ or womens’ are incorrect and should not be used as the words mens and womens do not exist. Its is a possessive form of the pronoun it, meaning belonging to it. I t’s is a contraction of the words it is or it has. When to use its or it’s Woodard, Roger D. (2006). "Alphabet". In Wilson, Nigel Guy. Encyclopedia of ancient Greece. London: Routldedge. p. 38. No, wait! The other thing I couldn't believe was that Kinsey was talking/thinking about the guy whose wife was dying of cancer, and said that as it was "female problems" (a second time she said it was uterine cancer) his sex life had probably been pretty lousy for a long time. Because yeah, if you're dying of cancer and it's NOT of your lady parts, well that should allow you to stay sexually (attr-)active enough to keep your husband from straying, but a "female" cancer...

This also applies to nouns that look plural even though they’re singular in function (e.g., “politics’ importance,”“the United States’ foreign policy”) and to pluralized versions of names (e.g., “the Johnsons’ car”). Examples: Apostrophe after “s” for plural possessivesMy grandparents’ cat is not very friendly. The Italic letter was also adopted into Elder Futhark, as Sowilō ( ᛊ), and appears with four to eight strokes in the earliest runic inscriptions, but is occasionally reduced to three strokes ( ᛋ) from the later 5th century, and appears regularly with three strokes in Younger Futhark. After an especially violent fight during which Foley tore down Violet’s new lace curtains and hit her with a coffee pot, Foley bought her a new Bel Air Chevrolet coupe as a peace offering. On the Fourth of July weekend, Violet hired Liza Mellincamp to look after her seven year old daughter Daisy so she could go to the late night fireworks display in town. She left home in her new car with her obnoxious Pomeranian named Baby under her arm and was never seen again. It’s is a contraction of the words it and is or it and has. A contraction is a shortened form of a word or group of words (we love to smush sounds together when we speak), with the omitted letters often replaced in written English by an apostrophe, as it’s does for the i in is and the ha- portion of has.

I even have a new favorite, "The Trolley," about the last trolley ride in a small town. Now knowing the history of public transportation in America, and the concerted effort that was made mid-century to limit/decimate it outside of major cities, this story pressed all kinds of buttons it hadn't when I'd read it years ago. If I ever get to teach my environmental literature class again, this might very well make it onto the syllabus. English generally uses apostrophes to indicate possession, for example, Mary’s bike (the bike belonging to Mary) and the lions’ roars (the roars of the lions). But, confusingly, English does not use apostrophes when showing possession for personal pronouns: yours, ours, theirs, his, hers, and … its. To and for are similar, so it’s easy to get them confused. Both to and for are prepositions, one of the eight parts of speech, and both are used quite a lot. The difference between to and for lies in their meanings and the words they’re typically used with.
