Batman has no inherent superhuman powers; he relies on "his own scientific knowledge, detective skills, and athletic prowess". [28] Batman's inexhaustible wealth gives him access to advanced technologies, and as a proficient scientist, he is able to use and modify these technologies to his advantage. In the stories, Batman is regarded as one of the world's greatest detectives, if not the world's greatest crime solver. [120] Batman has been repeatedly described as having a genius-level intellect, being one of the greatest martial artists in the DC Universe, and having peak human physical and mental conditioning. [121] As a polymath, his knowledge and expertise in countless disciplines is nearly unparalleled by any other character in the DC Universe. He has shown prowess in assorted fields such as mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry, and several levels of engineering. [122] He has traveled the world acquiring the skills needed to aid him in his endeavors as Batman. In the Superman: Doomed story arc, Superman considers Batman to be one of the most brilliant minds on the planet. [123] After Batman, Lowery enjoyed another 20 years in movies and TV. He is a master of disguise, multilingual, and an expert in espionage, often gathering information under the identity of a notorious gangster named Matches Malone. Batman is highly skilled in stealth movement and escapology, which allows him to appear and disappear at will and to break free of nearly inescapable deathtraps with little to no harm. He is also a master strategist, considered DC’s greatest tactician, with numerous plans in preparation for almost any eventuality.

Editor Julius Schwartz had decided to darken the character's world to further distance him from the camp environment created by the 1966 ABC show. Bringing in the talented O'Neil as well as the innovative Frank Robbins and showcasing the art of rising star Neal Adams...Schwartz pointed Batman in a new and darker direction, a path the character still continues on to this day. The series crossed over with The Flash again in issues #64-65, [135] [136] both written by Joshua Williamson, for the story arc The Price. Published in the middle of the story arc Knightmares and set shortly before it, The Price was a tie-in to the event miniseries Heroes in Crisis also written by King. Tom King's final story arc, Batman: City of Bane, saw the character Alfred Pennyworth killed by Bane in issue #77 (Late October 2019). Although initially planned as a long-form story lasting 100 issues, [137] Tom King's run ended with issue #85 [138] at the end of 2019. King would later return to the character of Batman in the 12-issue limited series Batman/Catwoman. [139]

Character Profile

The Batman series has had Annuals published beginning in 1961. Seven issues of Batman Annual were published from 1961–1964. [146] An additional 17 issues were published from 1982 to 2000 and the numbering continued from the 1961 series. [147] Writer Mike W. Barr and artist Trevor Von Eeden crafted Batman Annual #8 (1982) [148] and Von Eeden has noted that it is "the book I'm most proud of, in my 25 year career at DC Comics. I was able to ink it myself, and also got my girlfriend at the time, Lynn Varley, to colour it - her first job in comics." [149] Manning "1990s" in Dougall (2014), p. 224: "Writer Doug Moench and artist Kelley Jones introduced a pair of new villains into Batman's world with the Ogre and the Ape."

The character of Batman made his first appearance as the lead feature of the anthology series Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. The character's popularity in Detective Comics led the publisher to launch a new title entirely dedicated to stories about Batman – a step they had only taken previously once before, with the Superman series. Batman began publication in the spring of 1940, with stories written by Bill Finger and illustrated by Bob Kane, though Finger went uncredited for years thereafter. The first issue was published on April 24, 1940, containing four original stories introducing new characters who would become notable recurring villains of Batman's rogues gallery: two stories with the Joker, one with Hugo Strange and one with Catwoman. [6] The series was published quarterly until issue #5 (Spring 1941), and bimonthly afterwards. Alfred Pennyworth, the Wayne family butler, was introduced in issue #16 (April–May 1943). [7] Even Kevin Conroy, the man behind probably the most recognizable Batman voice, chimed in, saying at a C2E2 panel in 2010 that Bale’s voice was “ridiculous” and implored the actor to stop doing it. While The Dark Knight Riseswas not as well received as The Dark Knight, especially in the fan community, we will still happily defend it. Gustines, George Gene (July 1, 2018). Main article: Batmobile The 1966 television Batmobile, built by George Barris from a Lincoln Futura concept car Batman's primary character traits can be summarized as "wealth; physical prowess; deductive abilities and obsession". [89] The details and tone of Batman comic books have varied over the years with different creative teams. Dennis O'Neil noted that character consistency was not a major concern during early editorial regimes: " Julie Schwartz did a Batman in Batman and Detective and Murray Boltinoff did a Batman in the Brave and the Bold and apart from the costume they bore very little resemblance to each other. Julie and Murray did not want to coordinate their efforts, nor were they asked to do so. Continuity was not important in those days." [90]
