Danielle’s note: If you’re new here, you may not know that I was identified with autism as an adult, after my first child was diagnosed. Many, many neurodivergent adults are learning their identities quite late in life, after a child, friend, or family member is diagnosed. This book is a classic for explaining what ADHD is and what it isn’t, and it offers a lot of ideas around treatment options that are helpful for adults as well as children. Like Scatterbrain above, it also offers a much-needed reframe; your “failures” are not happening because you’re not trying hard enough! You just don’t have the tools you need for success . . . yet. One of my biggest concerns for my son is making sure he always feels loved, accepted, and understood. The first step on that road would be understanding himself. You may be wondering why books for parents of children with ADHD would be good when simple google searches can give so much information. Here are some perks of books: Short enough for a busy parent to actually read and use; utterly reliable and authoritative but never pedantic; wise, kind, and teeming with the chirping voices of children who have ADHD; this cornucopia of a book will feed you over and over again. Wonderfully written, infused with positive energy and solid information. All parents of children who have ADHD should buy it.” (Edward Hallowell, MD, best-selling author ofDelivered from Distraction)

A neurodivergent person himself, Ross-Child wrote this revolutionary book in hopes that it would help empower other neurodivergent people to develop their talents, appreciate their neurodiversity, and how to move through the world with confidence and clarity. Parenting our ADHD child well requires providing materials to help them in their lives. Here are some books I found that can help parents enlighten, empower, and encourage children with ADHD. Books for kids with ADHD This is an insightful and practical book where veteran psychologist Sharon Saline shares the words and inner struggles of children and teens living with ADHD, with a blueprint for achieving lasting success by working together. I love watching his YouTube videos and would highly recommend you watch them. I do, however, love books, something to have and hold. I’m old school. Some people find his approach authoritarian but, as with all parenting books, I would recommend you take the parts from it that suit you and your family. My daughter would never, ever do time out! When people told me to put her in timeout or on the naughty step, I would tell them to first produce a unicorn singing Sinatra. Do what you can. Beyond helping parents find ways to calm their children, the book helps them to nurture a child’s strengths. It contains tips for building creativity and helping children stay focused on subjects that motivate them.

This book is written by Sarah Templeton who is a therapist and has ADHD herself (diagnosed at 51). She has worked with hundreds of parents of ADHD children. It had been recommended by ADHD psychiatrists, paediatricians, parents, teachers, SEN teachers and ADHD teens. It’s for anyone that lives with, teaches, cares for or encounters a child with ADHD. We homeschooled, memorized Scripture like no one’s business, and I tolerated zero crap from my girls. And the pride oozed from my skin without me even realizing it. (Just like a Pharisee, right?)
