Taste: A solid mouthfeel and arrival. Malty flavours mixing it up with creamy butter and bakery notes – a buttery biscuit base. Fruits are much more green on the palate with apples and grapes adding a fresh summer sharpness. There’s a good level of bite and astringency here, as well as pleasant oak spicing from ginger and both salt and pepper. So, I refrained from purchasing it between the draw and christmas. Then, since our state owned liquor stores were out, I waited. BTW, I can surely attest that single malt scotch were a very popular Xmas gift last decembre. The color is of a nice gold and the eau de vie Coats the glass pretty nicely: the legs are nice and take time to disappear.

The finish is again white fruits with spices and stays with you until the next mouthful. Which could wait, but won't: the stuff is moorish. As in "I want moore". Amid closures and overproduction, you’d think the last thing any investor would do would be to open a new whisky distillery in Scotland, never mind opening one on the Isle of Arran. At this stage in the 1990s, no one really anticipated the boom we are currently experiencing. As, a side notes, ! played master blender with it and some BeenRiach Arumaticus Fumosus, and: WOW! Though weird that it's the speysider that lends the peat to the islander here. It reminded me of a young talisker. There’s a reason this bottling was nominated in the recent Online Scotch Whisky Awards (the OSWA’s) for “Best Entry Level Single Malt 2021” and “Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2021,” winning both categories! It goes to show how this presentation of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtering is captivating whisky connoisseurs. Arran are to be applauded. Palate: Honey, vanilla, cereal, and fruit. I'd say the honey and cereal notes really shine here relative to the nose. Funny thought, but I bet this would pair well with honey nut cheerios breakfast cereal. There's a resemblance. Also a resemblance to Balvenie 12yo, although I favor this. Arran’s 10 year old expression is composed of a majority of ex-bourbon American oak matured whisky with a smattering of some ex-sherry European oak. Like all Arran bottlings, it’s non chill-filtered and naturally coloured (both very good things) – that’s pretty unusual for a young entry-level bottling if you look across the rest of the market at similar prices whiskies. Likewise, it’s bottled at a very healthy 46%, again, quite a bit higher than many entry-levels which commonly come to you closer to 40% ABV.

The palate is all about the malt which is sweet and crisp. Minor sub plots are provided by some apricots and a pleasant saltiness. Those fruity salty notes also play over the finish which is less dominated by the malt.

The finish is full of pears, vanilla sweetness, with the spice from the taste leaving your mouth tingling. Not terribly long, but charming. The flagship products of Arran are the distillery’s non-age-stated Robert Burns single malt, and the core Arran 10 Year, the youngest of its age-stated products. That’s the sample I had, and that’s what we’re reviewing today. It’s bottled at a respectable 92 proof (46% ABV). It’s not entirely clear what kind of barrels this is aged in, but the assumption is that it’s exclusively re-use bourbon casks.
