The brilliantly clever rhyme and vivid, engaging pictures have made this story into a children's classic, beloved for over 40 years - and it's still one of the most popular picture books today. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy has lots of friends, including Schnitzel von Krumm (with a very low tum! Their long history of connection with witchcraft has suggested tales of magic cats such as Barbara Sleigh’s Carbonel, 1955, or, in a more down to earth setting, Rosemary Weir’s Pyewacket, 1967; and their urbanised versatility (dog stories are more usually about country life) is categorised unforgettably in T.

Slinky Malinki is a fictitious cat who features in the Hairy Maclary children's stories written by New Zealand author Lynley Dodd. A great opening to an excellent rhyming story about a mischievous cat who spends the night ‘pilfering and pillaging’ from houses in the neighbourhood. We had a wonderful black cat at the time and he was an indoor-outdoor cat, named Johnny, who looked like Slinky Malinki. Discover the joy of reading with us, your trusted source for affordable books that do not compromise on quality. Slinky’s night-time personality shift comes with nightfall and is psychological rather than outwardly manifested. He tries every trick in the book: sitting on their faces, biting their toes, leaping on their limbs, yowling. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Easily keeping up with the most energetic adult cats, they incite each other to greater and greater feats of daring.

The message is that these are cats we should be proud to know, described in verse so pleasing that it demands to be said, from the Rum Tum Tugger’s jogging perversities to Growltiger’s Kiplingesque ballad and the intricate jazz rhythms of Mungojerrie and Rumpeltazer*. During the daylight hours Slinky Malinki is playful and adventurous, teaming up with friends such as Stickybeak Syd. Told through playful rhyme and colourful illustrations, Slinky Malinki has delighted generations of children with his laugh-out-loud adventures.Recommended for the lovely sense of rhythm but also the rich language that Dodd doesn't shy away from. Oh, that cheeky cat Slinky Malinki has got up to his usual tricks and meddled with the Christmas tree decorations.

With its reindeer, ribbons, baubles and bells, it's too tempting a treat for Slinky not to investigate. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. As we discover, if were read more books about Slinky Malinki's adventures, this isn't the end of his fun, but taking a long break as a consequence of trouble-making is made clear in a way kids can potentially better understand than when it happens to them in their own lives. In my opinion this series is leagues ahead of the more famous Hairy McLary stories, and I recommend it to cat lovers everywhere, whatever your age.School Library Journal found that "While there's nothing wrong with this book, there's nothing to recommend it, either", and concluded "It's hard to imagine many preschoolers who would sit through the whole book. The book is beautifully illustrated, very descriptive and rhymes so children want it read to them over and over which is a strength of this story especially for early elementary grades like Kindergarten because the students would be able to hear the phenomes and the words that rhyme which would improve their reading fluency. One day I look forward to delving in deeply to Lynley Dodd’s perfect scansion, but for now I’ll point out the following techniques, also used by T. Here it looks like Slinky has been fighting with the stolen goods themselves; he is tangled up in wool and has a glove on his head. He makes no secret of the fact that he despises the undignified poking and prodding and will take his first opportunity to escape.
