Indeed, it occurs to me that Gerritsen deliberately gives the reader the experience of being ahead of the protagonists on occasion, creating an immersive reading experience. Adding to the mystery is the stalking of a female college student who turns out to have been a patient of Ms.The plot is somewhat complex in that there are at least three different storylines involving a murder, an abduction, and a stalker. Gerritsen walks that high wire between humour and suspense without ever falling off as she plays a great game of bait and switch with her readers. However, her unhesitating heroic action probably saves a life, and she provides light relief interludes from the main story. She’s made it her business to know everything going on in her neighborhood and these people won’t let her in.

You could easily read this as a stand-alone but if you then went back to the early books you could find them quite disturbing by comparison. With a teenaged daughter who randomly disappears, Angela wonders of there is something going on behind closed doors, but she is shunned away by the family and Detective Rizzoli as well. I especially disliked the parallel plot being 'investigated' by Angela Rizzoli, Jane's mother, who could almost be an American version of one of Richard Osman's OAP investigators!Convinced there's something fishy going on, Angela resorts to conducting an investigation of her own. I wanted to read it all in one sitting, but, unfortunately, life got in the way and I had to do it over two days. On the plus side, this wasn’t about a serial killer, had a carefully constructed plot that kept me guessing, and was easy to read without excessive gore. Jane and Maura are investigating a brutal murder with dire implications, and this time, with Jane's intrepid mother, Angela, looking into a mystery of her own. One quote: Angela Rizzoli "But tonight everything seems different, as if I've crossed into some parallel world and I'm now looking at the evil twin of my old neighborhood.

Nothing else to say except this: Welcome back, and pretty please listen to me and make it less time between this one and the 14th! I have loved coming back to see these two again, they take me back to a time when I first started reading thrillers!
