Rot is your enemy. The single biggest danger to seed germination is rot - either before germination or after "damping off" when the seeds germinate. To reduce the risk, ensure you have good free draining soil mix and that it is moist but not wet. The best investment you will make is a bottle of (very cheap) 4% hydrogen peroxide (mixed with water 1:4) - this disinfects and also encourages germination. Unless the seed variety absolutely requires it I prefer NOT to cover my seeds trays with plastic bags, Whilst germination is often faster this way, it greatly increases the risk of rot. I prefer to place my seed trans inside a watertight plastic tray and water from the bottom - airflow over the surface reduces the risk. The surface is kept moist as required by spraying with my water/peroxide mix (see above) Conditions do need to be pretty optimal to achieve the coveted five-day germination, which means it’s important to choose the sowing time (between March and October) carefully based on the weather. Covered with a green coating, it seems to deter birds – possibly because they can’t see it as easily, or because it no longer smells like seed to them. Either way, once raked in, they are less likely to steal it all away than they might with other seed. For general domestic use, I recommend going for a grass seed that contains various grass seed species. Look for a combination of Ryegrass, Fescue grasses, and Browntop Bent . This mixes durability, shade-hardiness and fine grass, providing a perfect balance. A certain amount of patience and trust is required as well, as the seed can lie relatively dormant for quite some time. Watering day and night, for as long as 15 days, is needed to start noticing small shoots appearing.

Perennial Ryegrass and Fescue grasses do well in the shade. So if you’ve always struggled with a patchy, uneven lawn in shaded areas, make sure to buy a grass mix which contains these varieties. This is a large, impressive bamboo that can be used as a large ornamental in the garden, to provide screening or as well use it to provide an everlasting supply of large bean poles which are expensive to buy in the shops!. Young canes are a light brown color and are covered with a soft fuzzy surface. Bamboo seeds are relatively rare as flowers and hence seeds are very rarely produced - sometimes ever 20+ years. Why choose Speedy Grass Seed? It's easy to grow! With just a simple process of shake, rake, and water, you can witness visible results in as little as 7 to 14 days. Our product is DEFRA approved, guaranteeing deep-rooted and weed-resistant lawns. Most manufacturer’s will state how much coverage you can get from their product. This can also vary depending on how many grams of seed the manufacturer recommends on using per meter squared. Browntop Bent isn’t as commonly found in hardwearing grass seed mixes, but it can make be included because it helps make lawns fine and soft. A small percentage of Browntop Bent, such as the 5% found in the GBW 1 kg Grass Seed, will add some finer, short grass to your lawn.If you don’t have the greenest thumbs, a hardy grass seed like RUNADI’s Speedy Grass Lawn Seed is a good option for those who are newer to the world of gardening. It doesn’t require quite as much preparation or maintenance as some of the other seed mixes featured here, and it produces results that are long lasting and easy to maintain.

Best Grass Seed Overview

In my experience, the best grass seed products are the ones that contain several varieties of grass. Some grasses are hardwearing; others cope well with shade, some do better than others in drought conditions, and others grow tall while a few are creeping. Results can be truly impressive, as long as the instructions are closely followed to a tee. This certainly isn’t a grass seed that can be thrown over the ground with abandon, hoping for life to grow, but if you have the time and patience to suitably prepare the earth, it has the potential to elevate a bald garden to a fully-turfed green. Industry Connections: We maintain close ties with manufacturers and brands, offering insights into trends and upcoming products. We recommend using a lawn fertiliser a few weeks after the seeds have started to grow to encourage a strong healthy lawn. Remember that birds like to eat grass seed, protect your lawn with netting or like while seeds are germinating.
