Description

The premise is an average teen (who rock climbs, so maybe not THAT average) happens upon Spidey's suit and dons it, with the predictable results. That is one of the important things people liked about the hero that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created is that anyone could be Spider-Man. Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Yu's adventures as Spider-Man demonstrates in spades just how hard it is for a normal person to try being Spider-Man.

He happens to come across an abandoned Spider-Man Costume and puts it on, thinking he could be like the Web-Slinger, but it would be fate that would make the fanboy face the most difficult question he has evaded, do I have the power to change my destiny? Liar Revealed: Yu thinks this'll be a problem if Emma finds out he isn't really Spider-Man, worrying that it'll make her want nothing to do with him. The bullies leave and Toby walks out, Yu attempts to apologize to Toby feeling guilty for not attempting to help him.

I feel that alot of the potential of this concept, being the hero without having the powers and living up to that Spidey name, was pretty much lost at points and with so much going on there lacked deeper substance.

Even though he is out of his element, Yu has to rise out of the dark depths of his despair and save the City from whoever threatens it. Naturally, out of curiosity he tries it on and soon finds himself mistaken for the real deal and fumbling through action-packed rescue and/or crimefighting situations. I was surprised by how the heartfelt nature of Spider-Man: Fake Red had really affected me by the conclusion, but I think it perfectly drove home that while our teen years can often be problematic, within us lies a certain quiet potential for achieving the unexpected or even heroic given the right circumstance. An awkward teenager puts on Spider-Man’s suit, but quickly learns being a hero isn’t all photo ops and social media likes.Overall this was an enjoyable read, and like the author, I hope it's given a chance to continue as a series. This book is fast-paced and pulls no punches with its fun or its focus on our character of Yu getting in over his head when he decides to play Spider-Man for a while in the real Spidey's absence. Ordinary High-School Student: Yu has no superpowers and no business trying to emulate Spider-Man, but does so after being mistaken for the real thing because it's what Spidey would do.
