To make a malt milk drink – simply measure out the recommended quantity of powder into a mug. Add a small amount of milk or water and stir into a paste. Then fill up the mug with milk or water. Using milk makes the drink richer, while using water gives a lighter consistency. Malted drinks can be made with cold milk but the usual option is to drink it as a hot drink.

Both drinks both have pros and cons, and if you are not convinced, I will also suggest some alternatives for you and your family to try out. Despite a few hiccups, this does feel like a celebratory time, and what better way to toast new beginnings than with a gorgeous cake? Ovaltine was originally called Ovomaltine, a name that came from the word ‘ovum’ the Latin for egg, followed by malt. Ovomaltine was first developed in Switzerland and is still made in the original village of Neuenegg, near to Bern. My vegan version is as faithful as possible to the original, using easily available ingredients and straight swaps as necessary. I’ve used my very shallow 4-tin set to make the cake pictured as I love the multi-layered look (using slightly more icing) but you can simply use the same quantities with two standard 8″ cake tins instead, as per Nigella’s original instructions.
