This is a rather amazing story, and at first I felt that it was all pluses and no minuses. I realized upon thinking about it however that maybe I (and the author too) were being a bit insensitive to at least some of the women in Thailand – those (who Weisman in fact features in the chapter) employed in Thailand’s sex industry. Now he does point out, quite rightly, that these women have benefited from the fact that Thailand is the world’s biggest maker (and a tremendous user) of condoms (the condom being really the “hero” of the chapter). But in a book that elsewhere extols the education and empowerment of women, the place of this segment of womanhood in Thai society/culture is surely a bit disconcerting, at any rate. The Sea. The Philippines. A strongly Catholic country which nevertheless is attempting to defy the Church and implement family planning.

I was much expecting a scary downhill line chart of how our sperms have been going down year after year in the past century. None was in the book. Numerically speaking, I could only find 1 paragraph describing WHO estimates of our sperm count threshold had been reduced. Fast-forward to the summer of 2017 when my latest paper on this subject, written with my colleague Hagai Levine and five other committed researchers, went viral.

Weisman clearly perceives the earth is overpopulated. I agree. He clearly believes that the earth and humanity are facing tremendous problems in the coming decades: global warming, food shortages, rising sea levels, degrading ecosystems, peak oil, falling water tables, possibly severe fresh water shortages in some parts of the world. All of these challenges would be made less formidable if humanity could level off its population and then start to decrease it.

ednocrine disruptors" и са отговорни поне частично за тревожната тенденция. Проблемът е, че се намират почти навсякъде, основно в пластмасови изделия. Two things annoy me: restaurant food is the worst, I get that, but ALL restaurant food? Fast food and five star restaurants? I need more information on that one.

The Great Wall of People, is set in China. The main topic is a revealing look at China’s one-child policy, instituted in 1979. _see here_ A little (or a lot) information on what’s in most of the chapters. Some of the longer ones are taken from status updates for the Transition group read. Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. See this thread for more information. Is the action overdone? I'd say quite possibly and lean towards yes. Even accounting for adrenaline, I'd expect Amy to pass out from exhaustion at any moment in the book. And that's before she goes into full superhero mode, where I felt I was reading a script for the next Mission Impossible movie. It's a bit over the top, as many action thriller are, but I was exhausted for the Amy after reading this! Weisman visits an extraordinary range of the world’s cultures, religions, nationalities, tribes, and political systems to learn what in their beliefs, histories, liturgies, or current circumstances might suggest that sometimes it’s in their own best interest to limit their growth. The result is a landmark work of reporting: devastating, urgent, and, ultimately, deeply hopeful.
