This type of tomato grows quite large, so you’ll want to make sure to use a large tomato cage. What Makes San Marzano DOP Tomatoes Better?

In 1996, San Marzano tomatoes were awarded the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) quality label, and given the official name Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sernese-Nocerino DOP. San Marzano tomato sauce is the ultimate pasta and pizza sauce. If you've ever had a simple pasta or pizza with tomato sauce in Italy, and wondered why it tasted so amazing, San Marzano tomatoes are the reason. In fact, they've been called the best tomatoes in the world due to their rich, full flavor and low acidity. San Marzano tomato sauce Jump to: Each can of La Valle San Marzano tomatoes contains 28 ounces of peeled tomatoes in a rich and flavorful tomato puree with basil. The tomatoes are carefully selected at the peak of ripeness and canned within hours of harvest to preserve their freshness and flavor. The result is a product that is both convenient and delicious, perfect for use in a wide range of recipes. Appearance: How do the tomatoes look coming out of the can? Are they a rich red color? More orange? Are the tomatoes intact and whole or are they squished and broken apart? How do I know if I am buying an authentic D.O.P tomato? Don’t be fooled by D.O.P San Marzano imposters claiming other 3rd party certifications. You need to inspect the label and should be able to identify these elements if you are buying a true D.O.P San Marzano Tomato: San Marzano tomatoes have less seeds than the typical plum tomato. Photo courtesy of I Love San Marzano DOP Where are San Marzano tomatoes grown? Born from Unique Soil: These beauties hail from the Campania region surrounding Naples, Italy. The district between Naples and Salerno, known as Sarnese-Nocerino, is famously recognized for these tomatoes. The area's Mediterranean microclimate and volcanic soil give them their unique flavor. They're even named after a town in the region, San Marzano sul Sarno.

Salt And Pepper: Salt and pepper are not just an afterthought in a great Italian tomato sauce; they're essential to enhancing the flavor. Now, with that said, you’ll find me pureeing my DOP San Marzano tomatoes when making my Everyday Tomato Sauce or Bolognese. As long as the tomato is a prominent flavor, I’ll be using it.

Yes! Cool the sauce then pour into an airtight container, label and freeze for up to 3 months. Serving Suggestions Canned San Marzano Tomatoes - Look for the DOP designation on the can so that you know you’re getting the real deal. The label should read “Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese- Nocerino DOP” or “San Marzano Tomatoes from Agro Sarnese-Nocerino DOP”. This indicates the exact region in Italy where they are grown. The can will also have the DOP seal certifying the designation. You can grow this strain of tomato plant at home in container gardens, as we have. They tend to grow well in full sun, in warm Mediterranean climates, and I usually plant mine in April here in California.
