Description

A fracture might be a closed wound where the break is under the skin, or an open wound where the bone has gone through the skin. An open fracture is usually more obvious - cover the wound with a sterile dressing or clean cloth. If you can, apply pressure around the wound. Elastic bandages come in many different sizes and lengths. They may come with metal clips or tape to fasten it in place. Ask your healthcare provider to show you how to wrap the bandage. The following steps will help you wrap an elastic bandage around your ankle. You can also wrap an elastic bandage around your knee, wrist, or elbow. Some PBS medications are restricted and require prior approval from Medicare before a doctor is able to prescribe them on the PBS. This prior approval to prescribe grants the doctor the Authority to prescribe the desired medicine and have it funded under the PBS.

Start the loose end of the bandage on the top of your foot beneath your toes. Leave your toes out of the bandage. In pairs, students could discuss the possible causes of fractures and then share their ideas with the class.

Miscellaneous

Take off the bandage at least 2 times a day. Leave it off for a few minutes then wrap it again. Ask your healthcare provider if you should leave the bandage off at night. If you come across someone with a closed fracture, which is under the skin, it isn’t always obvious; but it is important to get medical help as it might have caused internal bleeding. While learning about how to support limbs that could be broken, in groups, pupils could be given a limited number of materials and be challenged to build a support structure to hold a certain weight or object.

Remove the bandage if you have numbness or tingling or your limb turns cold or pale. Gently rub the area. Rewrap the bandage when the area feels better.Students could explore the complications that might occur if a closed fracture causes internal bleeding, and what internal bleeding is. Hold the loose end of the bandage in place with one hand. With the other hand, wrap the bandage in a circle twice around your foot. Always wrap the bandage from outside to inside. Wash the bandage each day or when it gets limp. Keep an extra elastic bandage in case the one you are wearing gets wet or dirty.
