Description

Based on a true story, Remember Me brings Mary Broad vividly to life in this moving story of a women triumphing against overwhelming odds. Sally was very much a closed book but with her new found surprising information Alice is very much determined to open it up. Alice starts to dig into her mother’s past and she throws up some surprising facts that she perhaps wished she had left buried but at the same time a clearer picture of her heritage starts to form for her and along the way she does find some romance. The majority of the book centres around Sally and her deception of which there were many. It begs the question what happens when the person closest to you has led a life of lies and secrets and deceived so many? Thank you to @michaeljbooks and Lesley Pearse for this advanced copy of Deception in return for an honest review. I really liked Alice, mostly due to her ability to be rational and level headed. No matter what she found out, she always seemed to be able to keep calm and understand things from her mother’s perspective. Not only that but she carried the burden of this on behalf of her younger sister and her dad to protect them. It was interesting to read about Alice realising that some of her own character traits were inherited from her mother.

Remember Me by Lesley Pearse | Goodreads

The majority of Sally’s, whose real name was Janet, decisions can be justified due to the events that we learn occurred in her childhood which in turn subsequently moulded how she was an adult but still Janet was a character who I never really liked and she wasn’t one bit endearing. She sets about changing her life but to be honest as I couldn’t warm to her at all I didn’t feel overwhelming hope for her that she would do well in life. I didn’t find myself overly rooting for a positive outcome for her because to be honest she just came across as someone mostly out for herself. She was deceitful, conniving, a schemer, treacherous and nasty and despite her childhood I questioned was there really any necessary reason for her to turn out in such a manner? Janet goes through an awful lot but I think thanks to her upbringing she knew no different in how to act and she should have known better. Janet is driven by a demon and manipulation, always wanting to be the top dog and used both men and women to get money and power. But will the road she trod upon turn out to have what she feels be a happy ending? Will Alice too be able to find some understanding from what she uncovers? I loathed Sally at the start of Deception, but as she transmogrified into her different personas and Alice found out more about her, I felt I had come to know a real woman. Her life choices may have been forced upon her, unwisely chosen or even criminal, but what Lesley Pearse does so well is to show the reader why Sally behaved as she did so that there’s a reality to her actions and an understanding In the reader.

The book maintains a very good balance, offering just the right amount of intensity without overwhelming the reader. As the story reaches its conclusion, it does so in a satisfying yet somewhat anticipated manner. Nonetheless, the journey to that point is fulfilling and rich in emotional resonance.

Fleur was probably my favourite character to read about in the story. What a complicated, troubled and yet incredibly strong woman she was. Despite a bad start in life and many obstacles, she seemed to keep going. Some of her decisions were questionable but I found it difficult to judge her for them. She hadn’t had an easy life and even when she did find her peace, I’m sure her past troubled her right until the end. Based on a true story, Mary Broad brings to life the horrors that a somewhat trivial crime could bring about in that period of time. 1786, shy of her twentieth birthday, Mary is sentenced to death by hanging, for the crime of stealing a silk hat. Spared her death sentence, she is sentenced to be shipped to Australia to live out her sentence and be put to work. From sentencing, the journey across the sea and eventually landing on the shore and the colony to work and fight for survival. ENG: I decided to read a Lesley Pearse book hoping it would be one of those cute romances everybody talks about. However, and without me knowing, I chose one of her books that do not fit it that category. In fact, I had never read such a violent book in my life. This is a remarkable true story of a young girl from Cornwall in England named Mary Broad who is convicted & sentenced to death for a petty theft. But instead she is transported to Australia as a prisoner. The story is enjoyable & captivating; historically enlightening. It takes you on a gripping sea voyage with the first fleet of convicts to Australia. The journey delves deep into the early days of these convicts...the first settlement in the country...How they had to struggle against appalling conditions to make the land viable for survival & living...and the hardships they endured.

Remember Me - Penguin Books UK

Alice always knew that her mother had faults and kept secrets but learning this information sets her off on a path to find out more about her life before Ralph. She wants to uncover the whole truth; the good and the bad. I absolutely loved this book! It's wonderful that it's based on a real life character. The writing style made me feel like I was actually there crossing the ocean in the stinking, filthy hold of the ship, the hot and nearly uninhabitable barren land of Australia, then the chill and damp of Newgate prison on her return to England. Everywhere she went, she gathered admirers and her amazing journey makes for the perfect story. UK historical fiction sensation Lesley Pearse is in top form with her latest melodrama about a daughter confronted with a truth that leads to her unraveling the past. Lesley is international writing royalty, with her thirtieth novel about to fly into the world she has always been a firm favourite in our home.

Also the transportation of prisoners is another of her stories in these books dealing with the treatment of prisoners who were sent to Australia to start up settlements. The criminal treatment that was involved with the transportation on the ships was barbaric leaving many prisoners dead or not far from it, with captains paid per head regardless of them being alive or not. The constant shortages of food and corporal punishment meted out was criminal while having to work in very harsh conditions and expected to maintain schedule of works.
