Also, the power system is completely electric so it produces zero emissions and is one of the more quiet lawn rakes. Which is quieter? well there’s not much between them but I would say the Bosch is slightly quieter than the Flymo. Below you will learn about all the great (and not so great) features of the Bosch ALR 900 lawn rake. This raker is built in the UK. Why dose this matter? well, customer service, warranty, quality and the availability of spare parts are second to none. How do you know you have a thatch problem? Lawns with an undergrowth and thatch problem tend to feel excessively bouncy and springy. And if you try to look through the grass and into the soil, all you see is a confounding mess of dried grass, moss and decaying plant matter. Similarly, it helps to choose a machine with an aerator so you can kill two birds with one stone. And if space in the shed is at a premium, you can choose a model that stores easily. A large collection box also means fewer trips to the compost and more time out in the field. What’s more, its plastic housing is impact-resistant, and that is why you can work without experiencing too much vibration. It weighs just 9.74 kilograms making it manoeuvre as easy as ABC during operations. With an estimated run time of 15 minutes when you use a 3.0 Ah battery, this machine makes it possible for you to get the most satisfactory result.

A lawn scarifier refers to a dethatcher, which is a useful tool to clean your gardens. This device is well-designed to cut through soil that helps in removing all dead moss plus other debris such as grass cuttings and other organic material. How to Choose the Best Lawn Scarifier? From its colours to its design, this is very clearly a Bosch product. Yes, it’s made from plastic, but it still feels strong and durable. With a width of 32 cm and four different height settings (+10mm to -5mm), its design gives it great versatility. Best overall electric scarifier and lawn rake: VonHaus 2 in 1 Lawn Raker / Scarifier– Beats the Bosch on value/performance [personally tested and proven] In other words, scarifying promotes the health of your lawn resulting in green and attractive grasses. These are the reason why a lawn scarifier is crucial to maintain your land. We recommend that you scarify your lawn once a year, but you should follow the process only after its two or three years old.

So, you’re thinking about buying a lawn scarifier? Great idea! The models above are what I consider to be the best lawn scarifiers on the UK market. The lawn rake attachment has 24 steel spring tines to work against all the elements that might choke your lawn. These tines attach to the thatches and collect them to a large 50-litre box. Due to a large thatch collection, you don’t have stop too much for emptying it. Then, this machine has a scarifier attachment with 14 steel blades. It’s suitable for tough conditions when there are lots of weeds, dead leaves and mosses covering your yard. Both these machines look like a lawn mower, and work in a similar principle – you push them along your lawn to achieve the desired effect. Both are used to improve the health of your lawn and garden. The handles once assembled can seem a little flimsy and insecure. Bosch have gone someway to resolving this by providing longer bolts to connect the handles. There are variations of scarifiers on the market, you could opt for a simple garden rake or a manual scarifier with wheels if you want to do it by hand. Though many gardens are quite big and it can be a tough job by hand, so we recommend using an electric scarifier for small to medium gardens and a petrol scarifier for larger gardens.

Now here’s the thing! Is the Bosch ALR 900 a practical lawn rake? We know it performs extremely well getting the job done, but what about practicalities? We selected from an array of analyzed products so that you won’t have issues making the right choice. Keeping your lawn healthy in the first place is the best way of preventing dead grass. However, it’s easy to forget that lawns require maintenance (they aren’t evergreen!) and just treating grass with lawn fertilisers is not enough.

My favourite design feature? The twist dial at the front of the machine that you can turn to adjust the height. Every other scarifier that I have ever used has had a lever, rather than a dial – not only does the dial make height adjustment easy and convenient, but it also gives the machine a more upmarket feel. Using a lawn raker machine is much easier today compared to manual scarification with handrakes. Once a lawn has been raked, fresh grass can have ample space, air and nutrients to grow into a bustling lawn.

When looking for the best lawn raker, it’s important to consider the power source. Petrol powered lawn rakes are more suited for handling larger, wilder lawns while electric models are lighter and quieter for small to medium lawnwork. Scarifying (removing the dead moss and thatch) isn’t a deep action – it only needs to be deep enough to yank out the thatch. A brand that has built its reputation on quality and innovation, AL-KO garden products are a favourite among both domestic and professional users. They usually go above and beyond their competition in more ways than one, so I had high hopes for their Combi Care 38E Electric Lawn Rake and Scarifier. Scarifying with the AL-KO I’m a big fan of Hyundai’s garden products – I recently tried-and-tested their petrol lawn mower, and it’s the best I’ve ever used. So, I expected their 2-in-1 Lawn Scarifier and Aerator to also become a favourite. Keep reading to see how it fared when put to the test. Analysing the performance of the Hyundai scarifier Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 is a performance-oriented electric scarifier that comes with a 1200W motor and robust steel blades. So, it will never struggle while removing stubborn thatches, moss and weed. Needless to say that it comes with two attachments that you can conveniently interchange without using any tools.

A manual lawn scarifier is quiet, easy to store and doesn’t require any maintenance other than scrapping the rust off. Ease of Use: When assessing ease of use, I considered how each model started and operated, the collection and disposal process, and the positioning of key features like the handlebars. I also thought about each model’s weight, as I know heavy models can make use harder. Slightly smaller scarifiers are typically more manageable for the average gardener, so models that weighed 12 kg or less were rated the best in terms of ease of use.

The Bosch Universal Lawn Rake 900 is a popular choice in the world of electric scarifiers, despite being higher priced than its competitors, and I was excited to find out why! The Bosch UniversalRake 900 in action But what bugged me was the collector. Perhaps I was having a dozy day but the frame (which way round it should go) took me a good few minutes to decipher. The user manual might want to work on that. Scarification is the best way to help keep moss at bay by removing organic matter such as moss or thatch from the surface of your lawn. Also, this stops your grass plants or lawn seeds from becoming suffocated before you plant them – so you won’t have to go through the stress of re-seeding! With a sizeable 1500W motor, this machine is pretty powerful. It feels faster than the others I tested, and it’s also noticeably wider (36cm instead of the standard 32cm) meaning that it won’t take you quite as long to scarify your lawn. Not only will it save you time, but it does a great job too. Once you find the right height setting for your lawn, it’ll pull up moss and thatch without damaging healthy grass. It doesn’t leave the lawn quite as churned up as some of its competition, yet it effectively removes what it needs to.

Lawn rakers have a plastic cylinder that is covered in sprung metal tines, which can pull out moss and thatch from your lawn in a combing action. Lawn scarifiers have the same plastic cylinder, but in their case it is covered with knife blades, which are capable of cutting into the lawn to remove thatch and moss. You can also use your scarifier on its lowest setting, to cut into the soil and improve aeration. Q: How to change lawn raker tines? Although the fact that the machine tips over instead of standing upright could be considered a safety issue, AL-KO has taken other steps to make this machine as safe as possible. It’s the only lawn rake and scarifier I tested that has a special light to tell you if the roller isn’t inserted correctly, and it’s also equipped with a safety button that needs to be pressed before you can pull the trigger. That said, the safety button and the trigger are spaced so far away from each other that you’ll need to use two hands each time you want to turn the machine on, which is pretty awkward. When you compare the depths they need to be taken with a pinch of salt in my mind. Whilst the VonHaus is claiming 15mm it’s very hard to gauge. This is only -10mm but when comparing the two cuts this Makita really does seem to be ripping more material 🤔 A scarifier works similar to a lawnmower. However, the former has tines, claws or blades instead of one rotary blade. Whether it’s a tine or blades, they are mounted on a roller like attachment that rotates at high speed and cuts the thatches and mosses. Depending upon the attachment, a scarifier can also dig a few millimetres into the soil bed. Take a small bladed screwdriver and remove the circular spring washer – don’t try to remove the split pin at the other end as it may be much stiffer than the first.
