Description

I’ve certainly studied photography, different photographers — mainly street photographers and photojournalists, but to say they’ve influenced what I do. There’s just something about the simplicity of his paintings and the use of different elements that seem out of place with one another. A still is a single frame that has to stand on its own,” he says, “whereas when you shoot a documentary or feature film, you tell a story using a different kind of language. I daydreamed about being a photojournalist at one point, but when the opportunity to study film at The National Film School arose, I took it.

I just love wandering which means I also take photographs during my time off when we’re shooting in places like New Mexico or Berlin. His command of light and eye for composition is as evident in his snapshots as it is in his cinematography. I spend a lot of my time trying to take street photographs, and with that you need to spend a lot of time just wandering around until something catches your eye. It's fascinating to see how he chooses to capture the decisive moment with his stills, as well as the compositions and use of light. Other Oscar nominations include Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners (2013), the Coen brothers’ Fargo (1996), Martin Scorsese’s Kundun (1997), Stephen Daldry’s The Reader (2008), Sam Mendes’s Skyfall (2012), and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken (2014).Byways, just like Deakins’ cinematography, takes you on an immersive and thought-provoking journey, from candid moments captured by the seaside or photographs taken during the year he spent documenting rural life in North Devon for Beaford Arts Centre through to images of tranquillity and reflection taken on his travels around the world or between shoots while working on films such as Skyfall, Sicario, and 1917.

This is the work of an artist picking up a slightly different camera and working in a slightly different genre. Byways is filled with purely black-and-white imagery – a medium Deakins finds powerful and enjoys working in, partly due to the work of the black-and-white photographers Deakins admired when growing up. Other Oscar nominations: Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners; the Coen brothers’ Fargo; Martin Scorsese’s Kundun; Stephen Daldry’s The Reader; Sam Mendes’ Skyfall and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, to name a few. Images that tell a story and include an element of humour also appeal because “it’s not just about lighting and framing. Byways' is the first monograph by the legendary Oscar-winning cinematographer Sir Roger A Deakins, best known for his collaborations with directors such as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes and Denis Villeneuve.

A replica of Michelangelo’s David stands in a recess at the end of a forlorn alley, above some trash cans. So that was interesting going back to those photographs, and then selecting ones that might not be for the archive where they are and they might not be the first choices because they don’t show a village square or they’re little moments, but they are things that I’m attracted to, so it was nice to rediscover those and let them live on the page. It’s in Weston-super-Mare and she’s sort of looking at a poster that’s on the other side of the frame. Before he entered the National Film School, he spent a year in North Devon, England, using his still camera to document the way of life on the farms and in the villages.BYWAYS includes previously unpublished personal black-and-white stills that reflect a life spent looking and telling stories through images.

Byways is the kind of book I find myself picking up almost absentmindedly when I have some time and want to go exploring.Thoughtful, poetic, and profoundly arresting, they display his distinct enigmatic sensibility, and presented for the most part with little or no information or context (index aside) form a compelling visual soliloquy that conveys with great eloquence, the profound power of the still image. Deakins few hobbies although it is more often an excuse for him to spend hours just walking, his camera over his shoulder, with no purpose by to observe. Overall a very good quality service from this seller and I would not hesitate to recommend this seller. So, I thought instead of creating a book of exclusively seaside photographs, why not include images from other places?
