Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses by Kristen O'Neal - a more teen-oriented comedy about coming to terms with being a fantasy monster. Enhanced Speed - The ability to perform motions, or movements, at a speed and effortlessness that surpasses that of a normal member of the user's species. Elizabeth was able to appear in front of Vendela during her attempted escape from the Hotel Cortez, unemotionally slicing her throat to prevent her from getting help from the outside world, [1] and later appeared suddenly behind Alex Lowe upon the mortal's discovery of the hotel's former pool housing the resting places of several vampiric children. [3] However, the manner through which scenes were filmed throughout the season - of afflicted appearing seemingly out of nowhere - leave this ability up to speculation, as they have never been directly seen moving at supersonic speed. As a result, it is unknown whether the afflicted are incredibly fast, or if they have the ability to instantaneously teleport to different locations at will. Leo Von Motteberg is a vampire and must abide by a stringent set of rules, such as avoiding daylight and steering well clear of garlic. However, she is rather anxious about the eighth rule, which stipulates that on the dusk of her 100th vampiric year, she must undertake her first hunt and drink the blood of her human prey. That there are 7 nights, well, OK, less than that, but you will have to read the whys and hows in the book. I really loved that there was a time limit, it made things a tad more dangerous and exciting! Deliciously dark, fangtastically feisty and gloriously gothic!' Laura Ellen Anderson, author of Amelia Fang

Neurons and Mental Illnesses - Damage or degradation of neurons due to disease cannot be healed by becoming afflicted, but rather prevented from progressing. As a result, those with such illnesses in life will still have them after being turned. [6] Coffee house Caffè Nero has announced the 16-strong shortlist for the inaugural Nero Book Awards, recognising the outstanding books of the past 12... How strictly these "rules" are applied varies and has never been clearly defined in the series itself. The way ghosts and vampires are depicted in this book is interesting. Rather than being seen as these pale, sexy bad boys/girls like so often portrayed in popular media, the vampires are shown in a much more monstrous light. For example, Leo is about six feet tall, incredibly skinny and has a mouth full of fangs, and can turn into an even more monstrous form (which we're thankfully spared an illustration of) before eating someone. The titular rules for vampires cover and prevent the balance from shifting too much and giving away the existence of vampires, enforced by the Vampire Council. The powers of ghosts in this book are fairly standard, but also have some interesting twists. Minnie is, of course, able to walk through walls and turn invisible, but she can also project some of her own memories. Despite being trapped by Leo, the Orphanmaster's powers allow him to reach out and affect the world, manifesting as a kind of rot that affects the town, the Dreadwald forest around the town and even the castle Leo lives in. His presence is genuinely threatening, even while he's trapped, and he will eventually become even stronger once the week is out. Overall, I like what the author did with the setting, and I look forward to seeing what she how she further explores it in the future.

Leo was a fabulous character and I really wanted to hug her at times. She definitely doesn’t have an easy time, but she is working hard and she tries her best. Not just with figuring out the Hunt and ghosts, but also figuring out herself and her family. This was the sort of door that was bound to open with a foreboding creak—and, sure enough, its rusty hinges gave a bitten-off squeal when the girl inched it open. She hesitated for a moment, listening intently. We are introduced to the timid but hot headed Leo who is now 111 and on the day of her waxing moon she doesn't make it and meets the Orphan master. At the start of the story when we are introduced to the Orphan master he is mean and hates children, but as I got into the story it tells me why he hates kids so much. Although Leo never gets to bite a human on her grim walk a ghost is twice as good. Conversion - The afflicted are able to spread their supernatural virus onto human beings by letting humans drink some of their blood, therefore transforming these humans into the afflicted.

Each time the vampire or the vampire’s companions do anything harmful to the target, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. Otherwise, the effect lasts 24 hours or until the vampire is destroyed, is on a different plane of existence than the target, or takes a bonus action to end the effect. A vampire and a ghost being friends is unheard of. It makes no sense. The two factions have despised one another for all eternity. But . . . Leo the vampire and Minna the ghost have battled together side-by-side, they're sisters-in-arms, they're best friends, and they'll have to work together to vanquish a new, deadly threat. Summoned to the Ghostly Realm for the murder of the Orphanmaster, Leo must complete three tasks to prove herself worthy of her unlife, each more treacherous than the last. Can Leo convince the Ghostly Realm of her innocence and earn her freedom, or will she be trapped there forever? This was a wonderful read! Vampires, Ghosts! And so much more~ I wrote a good/unsure/meh review, because I am just tired + have so much more to write. Haha. Basically, my issue with this story is mostly the portrayal of a family. I get it... You could argue, that it's not a typical family. They are vampires, etc. But... nothing can convince me, that what the "mother" did to make her this "family" is ok. She literally saw a two year old baby girl and decided to take her as her own, which meant to kill her and turn her into a vampire. Which also resulted in trapping this girl in a two year old body for centuries to come. Same thing happened to the main character, who will be 11 years old for forever. After one hundred years of being a vampire, it’s time for Eleonora to have her Birthnight. Since Leo’s last rite of passage, her Grimwalk, ended with her losing her right leg and a good deal of her confidence, she’s hoping to redeem herself in the eyes of her mother, the fearsome Lady Sieglinde. All Leo has to do is hunt down and kill her first prey, and she already has the perfect plan. After all, who will miss an orphan from the bleak St. Frieda’s Home for Unfortunate Children? He come on moonlight rays as elemental dust, as again Jonathan saw those sisters in the castle of Dracula. He become so small, we ourselves saw Miss Lucy, ere she was at peace, slip through a hairbreadth space at the tomb door. He can, when once he find his way, come out from anything or into anything, no matter how close it be bound or even fused up with fire, solder you call it. He can see in the dark, no small power this, in a world which is one half shut from the light. Ah, but hear me through. Leo is your average 111 year old undead girl, with an annoying little big sister and no friends except her cat and Rodrigo her pet spider.

This story depicts a terrible wrong doing by a selfish vampire who just kills kids and forces them into a very twisted family life. She doesn't even pretend to care about them like a mother. For goodness' sake the main character almost dies and not one of her family members comes to visit her when she wakes up. The only character that is concerned for her well being is her nanny/ butler. This is a truly disfunctional family. Enhanced Strength - The ability to exhibit strength beyond a normal member of the user's species. The afflicted are easily able to rip out a human's throat to drink their blood. [5] The first Manual was written in a time that has been swept away by history, before even your oldest teacher was born. But many years before the Manual even existed, before it was ink on paper, there was a girl who already knew these vampire-killing methods very well indeed. Ghosts - The afflicted cannot hurt or kill ghosts. They will also lose all of their vampiric characteristics and powers if they become ghosts themselves. [11] So whilst her mother is away at a vampire council, Leo sets off for Otto’s End to bag herself a human. She heads for St Frieda’s Home for Unfortunate Children and all goes well until she meets the Orphanmaster. Then Leo accidentally sets fire to the orphanage, creating two ghosts – one friendly, one most definitely not.Straighten your cape and sharpen your claws . . . being a vampire is harder than it looks! The deliciously funny debut from Alex Foulkes, illustrated by Sara Ogilvie. Readers are encouraged to empathise with Leo: she has one leg and is not able to fly like some vampires such as her sister and mother. This adds a greater level of connection with our hero. The illustrations added extra information and enjoyment although there was one picture of the Orphanmaster which confounded me! This book is funny for everyone. A real life vampire and all good and bad things that go with it! If anyone likes comedy I would recommend this book .Overall this is a comedy for all ages.

This book is a funny take on what it is like to be a real-life vampire and all the good and bad things that go with it! If you like comedy, thrills and suspense then you will definitely like this book as it has strong characters and a good plot throughout! How is this ok?! I mean I've seen/read dozens of vampire stories, and none of them ever did this to children. I guess "Twilight" came close with the vampire teenagers, but even there they specifically had a rule NOT TO TURN CHILDREN! And take for example the Hotel Transylvania. Sure there are vampire children, but they are born and can grow up to become adults even if that takes them decades.
