I look forward to reading it again, especially the second act, to really dig my teeth into what's going on. While holding its audience with the gripping tension of a detective thriller, it is also a philosophical play about social conscience and the crumbling of middle class values. This is a totally brilliant and totally horrifying play that I'd have absolutely used as book material if I'd read it before. The phrasing may sound old-fashioned, but the point is not; given that, in the modern period, we’re prone to expecting an apocalypse any day now, Priestley’s play, and his suggestion that if it comes the guilty party will not be them but us, is quite timely. Following the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, Priestley joined the British Army, and was sent to France --in 1915 taking part in the Battle of Loos. Well, not exactly, but the nature of time has been an indispensable part of creative literature ever since stories began to be told.Whether that's putting new work on stages across the world or supporting our outreach and learning programmes, every purchase you make really does make a difference. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you.

The play isn’t merely a period piece either, though it’s set in spring 1912, shortly before the sailing of Titanic, which is mentioned as imminent, and (we know) not long before another calamity, that of the First World War. With his third and fourth novels, The Good Companions (1929) and Angel Pavement (1930), he found great success and established an international reputation. What I really enjoy about Priestley’s work is that the family unit, and what it means when a family grows up, is really explored here.
