Description

It was only when one of my Twitter buddies, Moira, asked how many I had “bagged” did I stop and try to work it out.

I you look on the OS Map in this area you will see references to stone circles and if you have a good scout around there are indeed some stones which could be laid out in a circle but they are indistinct and I have failed to find anything definitive of their history. I only record the pillars and only started doing this a few years ago when I came across the TUK site ( although added retrospective ones from the hills I had recorded as having climbed). If you want to see the route on OS Maps and download a GPX file here’s the link and here’s a zipped GPX file.

Whether for the view or for the challenge, climbing the mountainous peaks in Lancashire is the best way to experience more of this beautiful region. A theodolite was secured to the top mounting plate of a pillar so that angles could then be measured from the pillar to other surrounding points.

Rob, of Peterborough, completed a list of 6,190 trigs and celebrated his achievement with 29 friends and fellow trig baggers in 2021. She is based in Scotland and is an all-round outdoors enthusiast with favorite activities including trail running, mountain walking, mountain biking, road cycling, triathlon and skiing (both downhill and backcountry). It would appear that for some the pure act of getting to the trig, ideally with the minimum of walking, is all that matters, they seek the nearest point they can leave their vehicle. The OS maps – and map apps – that many hikers and runners use are based on this Retriangulation process, although today most new measurements are done by GPS. There are good views here of the next stage with the Broadhead valley and the small hill of Hog Lowe Pike on the horizon. If you have far to go then please do at least venture across the dam to get the best view up the valley including the valve tower.
