Embark on a programme of Instructional Coaching with individual teachers or small groups, or use your existing teams to drive the process through a calendared cycle of meetings. The WalkThrus toolkit includes coaching session planning tools that can be linked to any technique, prompting discussion around the 5Ps. It’s important to use some form of objective assessment rather than relying on self-reporting or the general feelings people have.

Following the break-out success of Teaching WalkThrus Volume 1 (2020) and Volume 2 (2021), Tom Sherrington and Oliver Caviglioli present the third instalment of their five-step instructional coaching techniques. The first WalkThru of this section explains the ADAPT approach (Attempt, Develop, Adapt, Practise, Test), Sherrington and Caviglioli’s recommend method for implementing WalkThrus. It has provided professionals at every level with the shared language and understanding to improve teaching, giving teachers the power of ‘how’. WalkThrus can provide the all-important instructional playbook for coaching, outlining the possible action steps teachers can take to solve the problems they identify in their classrooms. WalkThrus provide the same support: a common language and repertoire of techniques fostering shared understanding with specific prompts for reflection and action planning. WalkThrus provides the all important reference point, supporting discussions about what the teacher is doing in the classroom, matching perceptions with reality, and what they might work on to improve their practice. WalkThrus offers the perfect answer - well-catalogued techniques accessible on any platform, to support coaches to give tailored guidance, matching solutions to the problems teachers experience.

WalkThrus is an external, online platform that provides teaching focused strategies, broken down into granular steps, that complement our approach to developing High Quality Learning Environments in all our schools. Each technique is simply explained and beautifully illustrated in five short steps, to make sense of complex ideas and support student learning. This is an external, online platform that provides teaching focused strategies, broken down into granular steps, that complement our approach to developing High Quality Learning Environments in all our schools. Tom Sherrington and Oliver Caviglioli team up to present 50 essential teaching techniques, each with five clear and concise illustrations and explanations. Still, in spite of that, Teaching WalkThrus has easily become my go-to reference from the many educational titles lining my bookshelves, and I have no doubt it will be for any who read it.

Furthermore, there will be opportunities to hear from other professionals from across the region about how they’ve used WalkThrus to transform practice in their classroom. This dynamic mix ensures that our colleagues can access valuable content at their convenience while also enjoying the benefits of collaborative virtual sessions. The programme is delivered through 5 sessions and focuses on strategies that offer solutions to tackling students’ learning problems rather than teacher performance. Plan your long-run CPD and coaching systems so that everyone is included and the approaches can be adapted to suit each teacher, regardless of their career stage or level of confidence. Be as objective as you can in gauging the progress you’ve made; the successes and the areas to develop further. Additionally, there is an engaging explanation of the rationale for the use and design of Oliver Caviglioli’s visual instructions. Alternatively, this programme would also be suitable for teachers looking to get the best out of their students and work towards mastery.

Working across a system of sixty schools, WalkThrus has transformed teachers’ approach to their craft.

We hope this exciting new programme will enrich our collective knowledge, skills, and expertise, developing over time to reinforce our commitment to excellence and valuing our people. Primary and secondary teachers in their 3rd/4th year of (QTS) teaching who are either new to WalkThrus or have experience of using them in their practice.
