You can set the miter limit to determine the corner shape in objects containing lines that meet at sharp angles. Corners with angles above the miter limit are pointed (mitered); corners with angles below the miter limit are beveled (squared off). If you want to add some character to your tracing and outlining, the brush pens and rough pens can be fun choices to experiment with.

There’s even a Salt Watercolor brush that can give you a grungy, smooth, watery line that is quite the showstopper when used for an outline. Please note: we have the latest version of Procreate 5X. If you do not see the features mentioned below, ensure your Procreate is up-to-date. Step 1 - Duplicate a BrushLooking at Procreate’s default brushes, it’s probably no surprise that the technical pencil wins the award for one of the best pencil brushes to use for tracing. For Mac users, the Outline tools can’t be added to the toolbox, but you can access the same settings on the Outline tab of the Properties inspector. We are going to work with a standard brush provided by Procreate. To select a brush go to the “Brush Library” which is the brush icon on the top right side of your toolbar. After locating the brush, duplicate it. Duplicate the brush once more. We want 3 of the same brush, the original brush + 2 Copies. That said, if you’re solely looking for Procreate tracing brushes, you may be more interested in pencil brushes. You can also use pencil brushes for rough and ragged outlining, if needed. Type a value in the Tilt nib box to change the orientation of the pen in relation to the drawing surface.

There are a few details that make a drawing pen different from a traditional ballpoint pen. First is their tip size. Ballpoint pens generally have a 1-millimeter tip, whereas drawing pens will have a finer tip. This allows them to create very precise lines. They also run very smoothly against your paper without scratching or making noise. The ink of a drawing pen tends to be more opaque and will not smudge or bleed through the paper, as well.To create a cuttable outline for devices such as plotters, vinyl cutters and Print-Cut devices, you need to assign the appropriate predefined color name (usually CutContour) that is specified by the device manufacturer. At this point, your brush stroke will no longer show on the drawing pad, but don’t panic we will fix it now. With the secondary brush still selected in your settings panel head to “Properties”. In Properties, under “Brush behavior” adjust the “Maximum Size” lower. As you start lowering the max size you will see the Primary brush showing as an outline. You can specify the position of the outline. Outline options from left to right: Outside, Centered, Inside. When you draw with the monoline brush, it’s a solid stroke that has no texture or frills. This makes it a perfect brush for creating inconspicuous lines for tracing, or beautifully clean lines for your outlines.

That’s great, but we don’t want a “fun” Procreate brush for our outlining and tracing. Give me a boring brush, please! Note that cuttable outlines do not print when identified by the RIP or Print-Cut device. If you want to make the outlines printable, you can use the Object Shaping Boundary command. To specify line and outline settings While the technical pencil brush is my go-to for Procreate tracing pencil brushes, any of the pencil brushes can work for you, depending on your needs.There are some brushes, such as the painting brushes, that have fun textures and dynamic qualities.

Ok, so you may have noticed that we’ve only talked about ink pens so far. I love ink pens because they’re versatile. You can easily use them for both outlining and tracing. You can also change the outline width of a selected object by typing a value in the Outline width box on the property bar. To create a calligraphic outlineIn the Brush Studio, you will see the 2 brushes, one being the primary and the one below is the secondary brush. You can edit each brush separately, but we want the two brushes to stay the same, and only making edits on the secondary brush to create our outline brush.
