Enraged at being duped and then shamed, Polyphemus lamented to his father, the god of the sea – Poseidon, to avenge him. Thus, many of the following trials that Odysseus and his crew faced were blamed on the Poseidon’s wrath for insulting his son. 11 The Sin of Hubris and Inhospitableness While there isn’t a cyclops monster in Norse mythology, some scholars compare the cyclopes to the Norse god Odin. In Norse mythology, Odin sought the power of cosmic forces and universal wisdom. In short, he wanted to know everything about everything. So, to demonstrate that he was worthy of such power, he made great sacrifices. One of those sacrifices was that Odin gave one of his eyes to Mirmir, the wisest of gods. He did this in exchange for drinking from Mirmir’s well of wisdom, or the Well of Urd. In losing one of his eyes, Odin consolidated his power. In other words, he lost some of his sight but gained even greater insights. 21 In this way, Odin shares symbolism with the cyclopes. Both make gains as a result of their limitations. For the Greek cyclopes, they created magical objects, including Zeus’ weapons, Artemis’ bow and arrow, and the invisible helmet – all which shaped universal events. Cyclops Symbolism and Meanings Thousands of years later, the Greeks discovered some of these bones. When they found a pygmy elephant skull, they would have held a skull that was about twice the size of a human skull. However, the pygmy elephant skull had a large hole in the middle of the forehead where the elephant’s trunk had been. He’s been a leader and a revolutionary, a husband and a father, a hero and a villain–He’s Cyclops, the first X-Man. The many roles Scott Summers has played since his debut in 1963 have made him one of the X-Men and comics’ most complex characters. In honor of Slim’s full-fledged return from the dead in this week’s Uncanny X-Men Annual #1, AiPT! is proud to present: CYCLOPS WEEK!

The mismatched pair inspired later poets and playwrights. In some versions of the story, Polyphemus learned to play a flute or lyre to nurse his broken heart. However, he became so adept at the instrument that the beauty of his music lured the nymph out of the water and to his side. 14 (In a way, it was like a classic mermaid tale, but in the reverse.)According to Greek cosmology, before the world was created, the universe was only chaos. From this chaos, the first female deity, Gaia (who was the Earth itself) was born along with two male deities. These were Tartarus, who was the “pit” or underworld, and Eros, who was the embodiment of love. In addition to their building and smithing skills, the cyclopes could also be quite romantic… Polyphemus and Galatea Polyphemus spying on the nymph Galatea and her lover Acis. Forrest: I actually love this. It’s a refreshing but recognizable take on the character that, sure, falls prey to the same pouch predilections as the previous, but is offset by some cool details and flowy hair that is the envy of this bald man very much. Score: 8/10 Considering Greece’s proximity to and dependence on the sea, it comes as no surprise that Poseidon is one of the oldest of the Greek gods. In 1995, the X-universe changed dramatically. Due to Legion accidentally killing his father, Charles Xavier, in the past, he never lived to form the X-Men and history reshaped itself accordingly. In the new timeline, Apocalypse ruled the United States with an iron fist, while the X-Men were led by Magneto and Rogue. Well-known characters often appeared in unfamiliar roles, which was certainly the case for Cyclops. "Prelate Summers" wasn't the leader of the X-Men. Instead, he worked alongside Mister Sinister to serve the cause of Apocalypse, although readers soon found out that Scott's heroic side wasn't completely absent in this new reality: he had been helping people escape the slave pens for years. When the Roman poet Ovid wrote Metamorphoses in 8 AD, the romantic story became a love triangle. In the story, Galatea falls in love with the mortal man named Acis. Not one to control his angry impulses, Polyphemus becomes so jealous that he kills Acis. However, Galatea turns Acis into an immortal river spirit. 15 Euripides’ Cyclops

The classic blue-and-yellow costume

Forrest: I’m a big fan of these simple, X-centric (has that ever been a book title?) suits but this one misses the mark with the boots and the gloves like Jason noted. Cyclops… are you wearing the Chanel boots? Score 5/10 The power of Cyclops' optic blasts is well-known. Less well-known is that he also has the power to make readers' eyes bleed: at least that's the effect that was achieved by this garish and short-lived outfit that only appeared in one issue, "X-Men" #35 by the creative team of Fabian Nicieza and Liam Sharp. The issue sees Scott and Jean have their honeymoon interrupted when they assist with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attempt to deal with a powerful mutant. Jason: Let it be heard far and wide, I have always hated X-Men flight- and wetsuits. This thing is just so boring and flat. AND HE KEPT THE DAMN PIRATE BOOTIES AND GLOVES! What the hell, Slim? Hire an image consultant. Wait a minute, X-Factor? An image consultant put you IN this mess? Woof. Score: 4/10 David: I loved the visor with this costume, the ribbed arms and the prominent Phoenix on the chest. The glow and shoulder pads offer a sense of godly power. It’s a rad costume. Score : 9/10 David: This costume makes some sense given the armor he’s wearing, although that hair has to get in the way when fighting. This look appears to be an evolution of Jim Lee’s design but darker and brooding. I say it’s about as good. Score: 6/10
