A multitude of family members are introduced in small vignettes, bringing color to the slowly developing tapestry of this affluent upper middle class family. Their prosperity is secured by their successful lumber business. Gradually we come to know the whole family, their employees, and their community. Their code of behavior are middle-class respectable, rather than aristocratic stylish, which still do not make their transition and adaptation to a less rigid hierarchy and age less painful. The boys go to school and the girls are tutored at home, to be sent off to finishing schools later. I am glad I read the book. It was a fun ride.....but I am not sure I want to continue right now with the next in the series. Maybe at another time. This tumultuous window immediately preceding the couple of years before the English 1939 WWII beginning or the 1940 London blitz year! And what a window! There are a great number of characters introduced herein, and I expect they will also be present through the subsequent novels. In the family alone (including one daughter-in-law’s sister, husband, and children) we meet 11 adults and 12 teens and children. There are also many servants and others who interact regularly with the family. I just immensely enjoyed to be a fly on the wall and become so intimately involved in a family's joys and sorrows. I felt like the BFF of all the protagonists, from old to young, receiving the continuous letters in which the news and personal impressions of a treasured family was shared in a quiet, decent, dignified drama of love, laughter and loss. Cooper, Artemis ‘’Elizabeth Jane Howard: A Dangerous Innocence’’, London: John Murray (2016), p.260. The children in this novel were really humorous, and 99% of the time they did not mean to be so. The things they said and the thoughts that flitted through their heads were hilarious.

Retrieved 17 February 2018. This all occurred on the eve (1937 & 1938) before World War II came to England’s doorstep. At least a couple of the characters had war wounds from the first world war.
