Secondly, I feel I should give a hearty thanks to the people of Quercus, for sending this book to me. It was a delight and an adventure to read, even though ‘delight’ feels like too light a word. Especially to stand beneath such a heavy narrative. At any rate, on Thursday I will be voyaging down to Waterstones, and purchasing another copy. As a reader, I greatly enjoyed this book, but as a writer I found it incredibly inspiring. This is a book I’d like to keep on my shelf, and return to when I’m in need of a reminder of the sheer force and power that good writing can muster. Dark Water' is a powerful, nineteenth century gothic novel that draws parallels between the deepest, darkest oceans and the depths of the human mind. We follow affluent and privileged Bostonian Dr Haram Carver, as he boards the USS Orbis where he is to become assistant surgeon. On his voyage he encounters William Borden, a member of the ships crew. They then go on to meet years later when Borden is admitted to a mental asylum and is under the care of Carver who resolves to try to cure his acquaintances madness. Strong is strong and weak is weak, and it doesn't matter if you wear breeches or skirts or if you're the latter. Life will hammer you flat" Steigrad, Alexandra (January 14, 2016). I thought it was fun to see "Watson" (Arent) handle the mystery, and I was cheering him on with each new reveal.

Dark Water by Stuart Turton review The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton review

For an author to be able to engage the reader into the depths of the story to the degree I did, I felt this a genuine skill not many writers can accomplish. Intricately detailed in a casual and entertaining way, this ensured you knew exactly how the scene was playing out and many a time I could sense the salt air and the grimy smell of the unwashed sailors. Not a pleasant sensory but a very necessary one, considering most toilet routines were carried out at the end of the ship and sailors often washed their clothes in their own urine. In 1634, passengers and crew begin boarding the merchant ship, Saardam, for a voyage from Batavia to Amsterdam. Oscar-bait no more: why serious-issue dramas are floundering". While I personally was not enamoured by The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, I was willing to give Turton another try. Wiseman, Andreas (November 9, 2018). He likes a chat. He likes books. He likes people who write books and people who read books. He doesn’t know how to write a biography, so should probably stop before he tells you about his dreams or something. It was lovely to meet you, though. A five star read (which I would award more to if I could) that kept me enraptured and entertained from start to finish! Would I recommend? Aye,aye captain I would! The middle of his novel drags. Arent and Sara investigate by asking the same boring questions to the same people, they explore the ship some more, and that's kind of that. The Governor, who is compared to a hawk and happens to have very sharp nails, acts like a Bad Guy, which is not a spoiler since within a few lines of being introduced to him we know that he beats his wife. This publication is based on the making and journey of his artwork, Dark Water, Burning World (2016), with 16 essays by museum curators and other individuals who were inspired by his artwork. Now, Hiram's delusional hero complex is well-explored; his hypocrisy and entitlement are littered throughout the book. Yet this is not a character study. Or maybe it is, but the characters and their struggles are so absolutely painfully clear as allegories for something else, that it's absolutely painfully hard for me not to notice them.
