I was surprised to learn ( through the introduction to this novel) that the original author died a few years ago and this book was a collaboration of “Beaton’s” ideas and Green’s. The new book definitely removes some of the nastiness of the later books (characters hurling insults and abuse at each other) but also reduces the antics. ABOUT 'DOWN THE HATCH': Private detective Agatha Raisin, having recently taken up power-walking, is striding along a path in Mircester Park during her lunch break when she hears a cry for help.

Once again finding herself at odds with the incompetent DCI Wilkes, Agatha is determined to prove that this latest death was in fact murder and bring the perpetrator to justice. C. Beaton, the Queen of Cosy Crime, about an eccentric Cotswolds-based detective with an erratic love life and a penchant for G and Ts . While bookselling, by chance, she got an offer from the Scottish Daily Mail to review variety shows and quickly rose to be their theatre critic. It will take its place at the end of the shelf with all the others but I don't think it will be taken down and reread as all the others are.Review of the Blackstone Audio Inc audiobook edition (October 2021) released simultaneously with the St. C. Beaton's imperfect heroine is an absolute gem' Publishers Weekly'[Agatha] is a glorious cross between Miss Marple, Auntie Mame, and Lucille Ball . Don’t worry though - Agatha’s fire is still there and she still speaks her mind on behalf of victims and her friends.

When his death is discovered to be due to the imbibing of rum laced with weedkiller, the idea of it being accidental is dismissed by Agatha. Her private life is no less turbulent when a past suitor reappears just as her ex-husband seems intent on rekindling their romance, and her close friend, Bill Wong, is in danger of losing the woman he loves. Green, her friend and fellow author, has picked up the mantle and attempted to carry on with the series with all the usual characters. she glanced up at a sign above the door of a neat pavilion that overlooked the lawn, 'Mircester Crown Green Bowling Club. When I’ve been reading a lot of “issue” books and am anxious over the state of the world, it’s nice to slip into an Agatha Raisin book and be distracted for awhile. Agatha Raisin becomes embroiled in a turmoil of jealousy and lies when the tranquility of her local bowls club explodes into a storm of accusation and intrigue - and murder. Still contending with her feelings for Sir Charles Fraith and next-door neighbor James Lacey, she must also fend off the unwanted advances of the new coroner. Agatha has plenty of helpers and all our old favourites are back, such as James, Charles, Toni, Simon, Bill, Roy and Mrs Bloxby. In all, it is a promising continuation of the series and I look forward to reading the next installment.

Events take an even darker turn when Agatha realises that, in pursuing the bowling green killer, she is putting her own life in danger.

Not only does Agatha have a murder or two to solve, but also exotic animal smugglers to catch, which almost proves to be her undoing.
