Probably the most common reason for using mouthwash is to target bad breath. Pretty much all mouth rinses counteract bad breath whether by covering it up with a minty smell or by fighting the bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath.

Perhaps you want to try a homemade mouth rinse or maybe you just want to know how and when to use mouthwash to get the best effects. Along with its needed effects, hydrogen peroxide topical (the active ingredient contained in Peroxyl) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Also worth considering is the range of mouthwashes from The Breath Co, none of which contain fluoride or alcohol. However, if the burning sensation persists, it is important to stop using the mouthwash and consult a dentist.

However, for many people, swishing with a capful of mouthwash is a familiar and essential part of their daily oral hygiene routine. If your routine wouldn’t feel complete without this, using a cosmetic mouthwash shouldn't do any harm, as long as you choose containing helpful rather than harmful ingredients (such as alcohol, ethanol, and hydrogen peroxide). Therapeutic Mouthwashes This is the most effective way to remove the plaque bacteria which cause bad breath and tooth decay. Using a tongue scraper can also make a big difference to your breath.Following is a sample armamentarium of products that can help provide relief of postoperative soft-tissue discomfort. As mentioned previously, there are many excellent products available for this purpose, and the following examples are not intended to comprise a complete list. Colgate Peroxyl Mouthwash is alcohol-free, making it a good choice for people with dry mouth or alcohol sensitivity. Witt J, Ramji N, Gibb R, et al. Colgate Peroxyl Rinse, which is available in a mouthwash and also a spot gel for postoperative pain, is used to soothe and heal. This product begins to work immediately. The mouthwash comes in a sachet size, so patients can use it in the dental office immediately after treatment is completed, and the office can send them home with a few sachets to use as needed. This is also a great product for relief of pain from canker sores. It is recommended that Peroxyl be discontinued after 2 weeks of regular use. This product contains 1.5% hydrogen peroxide and 6% ethyl alcohol. The hydrogen peroxide is used to debride the gingival tissues, helps soothe oral irritations, and promotes healing. At SFH: Either one crushed 500mg tablet (or one ampoule 500mg/5ml) made up to 10ml with tap water. This gives 10ml of 5% solution. Usual dose is 10ml qds.

Many brands include a teeth whitening mouthwash in their range, containing hydrogen peroxide or another whitening agent. Hydrogen peroxide is the same ingredient used in professional whitening treatments, but its concentration in whitening mouthwashes is so low its effects are minimal. Colgate Peroxyl Mouthwash contains hydrogen peroxide, which is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Swish vigorously.Keeping your mouth closed, swish the liquid around your mouth and between your teeth. You might choose to gargle, too. Keep going for the specified time, usually 30 or 60 seconds.

At NUH: mouthwash supplied is 10% (500mg/5ml). This should be diluted with an equal quantity of tap water prior to administration. Regular use of mouthwash for bad breath may be masking a more serious problem. Halitosis (chronic bad breath) can be caused by rotting teeth, gum disease, and other medical conditions. Visit your dentist rather than trying to cover up the issue. Applies to hydrogen peroxide topical: topical application gel/jelly, topical application pad, topical application solution, topical application spray. Serious side effects of Peroxyl Compared to daily brushing and flossing, mouthwash isn't an essential step in everyone's oral care routine. Many brands offer cosmetic mouthwashes that help make your mouth smell and clean fresh, temporarily. Other mouthwashes are designed to help treat oral conditions, and these should be selected im consultation with a dentist. Many dental offices are providing full-mouth reconstruction procedures, and often patients sit in a dental chair for a long period of time with a rubber dam clamp or other dental device in their mouth, which can cause slight trauma to the gingival tissues. Other procedures that may cause patients to have pain include surgical extractions, endodontic treatment, orthodontic treatment, periodontal surgery, scaling and root planing, and even a regular dental hygiene preventive appointment. Many of these procedures require postoperative instructions pertaining to the specific procedure.
