The step ladder is retrieved from the garage to help with a visit to the loft to look at the ducting and distribution boxes for the MVHR system. We see some metal distribution boxes and ducting which together send the heated air round the house. We start wondering why the air distribution boxes are housed in an unheated loft space and why they are not insulated to prevent heat loss? Draught excluders come in a variety of types including door snakes, brush-style, and foam-tape, each designed to suit different door configurations. 5. Where else could I fit a draught excluder? We wanted to create a 'sensory-balanced' workspace that was both socially sustainable and adaptable' The pictures of the French doors in the kitchen told a similar story to the lounge with a cold area around the door threshold. Apologies for the poor illumination of the right hand picture. When taking thermal images you tend to forget that it records both a thermal and a normal image; I didn’t ensure the light levels were sufficient for a standard picture. At least the triple glazed windows are showing a decent temperature of 18°C so we are not losing too much through the glass. Aluminium Sliding Patio Doors Light polyfill may be a budget-friendly option, but for doors that won't stay closed, a weightier option like sand or gravel-filled excluders might be ideal. You can get designs that have buttons or fixings to attach to the door. Most soft cushion excluders are simply placed up against the door once it’s shut. In this case, the draught excluder won’t be in place when you’re out of the house, so the gap at the bottom of your front door is still a weak spot in your home’s thermal envelope, allowing heat to leak out and cold air to come in. For this reason, a soft pillow draught excluder is probably a better method for internal doors rather than your front door.

These products can be bought and fitted yourself, but to do it properly you should either be good at DIY or employ a carpenter who can make sure there are no gaps and the draught is completely excluded,’ says Elizabeth Assaf, Designer and Co-Founder at Urban Front. 3. Add draught strips around the edge of the door The most popular measure of energy efficiency in your home is the U-value. This describes how effective a material is as an insulator. The lower the value, the less heat is able to pass through a given area of material in a given amount of time. It’s typically measured in watts per metre squared. A standard double-glazed window will have a U-value of just under three. With proper installation and maintenance, draught excluders can serve you well, keeping your home warm and your energy bills low. Energy Saving Tips A bit like your letterbox, the keyhole is a small but disproportionately leaky gap in your door that could be letting in unwanted cold air. There are several options for this. A simple round of metal attached with a screw can be added to the outside of the door and pushed to the side when you’re using the key. These are called covered escutcheons and are a common feature of front doors; you possibly already have one.

There’s something calming about having a white scheme. It’s a blank canvas you can add to and change up whether it’s with cushions, plants and flowers'Draught-proofing your home brings along a slew of benefits that go beyond just keeping the cold at bay. Here are some key advantages: Identify the main sources of draughts in your home, be it windows or doors, to choose an excluder that suits the location. Gas leaking from between the double-glazing is another cause of energy inefficiency. This happens when the seals around your double glazing have broken down. You’ll know if this has happened to you because condensation will be visible between the panes of glass; if moisture can get in, then the gas will almost certainly already have gotten out. The inert gas between double glazing panes conducts much less heat than normal air and so if it has leaked out, your glazing will be less efficient. It’s impossible to repair this wear-and-tear, and so it so you will require either a double glazing replacement or a door replacement. As this breakdown is a sign that the door is nearing the end of its life, many people opt to replace their French doors. Banish the under door chill with this stylish rectangular draught excluder. The soft and cosy cover is designed in a beautiful carved diamond pattern to not only provides practical insulation but also to add a touch of style to compliment any decor.

Bear in mind that the way your door opens makes a difference to what method is best. For instance, hinged flap designs are only suitable for doors that open inwards as they won’t be able to travel over the door frame. If your doors are mounted using 3D-hinges then these usually have circa 5mm adjustment (+/- 2.5mm) on the height and side movement and circa 4mm adjustment (+/- 2mm) on the compression (moving the door further/close to adjust how much the door compresses the seal). By adjustments using an allen key you can compensate for a slightly skewed door but if the door or frame are skewed or under/over size by more than a couple of mm then one of them would need to be remade to avoid having a gap. I’ve not come across a printed guide to the procedure but when watching installers they seem to adjust the height of all hinges first then the side and finally the compression. The problem with having a skewed door to start is that with slight expansion and contraction (during summer/winter cycle) then there is a risk the door will catch at some stage.Another important consequence of having an energy efficient home, however, is that it’ll save you money. The less heat escapes from your property, the less energy you’ll need to spend generating heat to replace it, and the lower your energy bills will be.
