Theresa Holland has been contributing to Byrdie since 2020, covering wellness, makeup, skincare, and haircare. For this story, she interviewed two stylists for product recommendations and insight into the science of color-depositing hair washes. Having tried a handful of blue/purple shampoos in the past, she's particularly fond of Fanola and Kevin Murphy. You can read more stories by Theresa on MyDomaine and The Spruce. When you reference the color wheel, you’ll notice that blue is directly across from orange which means that blue toning shampoo should be your go-to if you’re looking to cancel out orange hues.

Follow up your toning shampoo with a glossing treatment to keep your vibrant and freshly toned strands looking their best. Safe for virgin strands and color-treated hair alike, use the L’Oréal Paris Sulfate-Free Glossing In Shower Acidic Glaze post-wash, two to three times a week to help seal the hair cuticle and restore hair with a shiny, silky finish. Spray all over wet hair after shampooing, let it sit for one to three minutes (do not rinse) and follow up with conditioner.

Choosing the best shampoo for you depends on (1) your current hair color and type and (2) whether you're looking to tone or maintain your preexisting colored hair. How to choose the best color-depositing shampoo for light hair: Using green shampoo to neutralize the unwanted red in your hair is a lot easier than using a color remover. Using a color remover is a longer, more complicated process. Now that we have this color toning companion with us, it’s important to know how to use it correctly. Matrix celebrity hair stylist George Papanikolas shares his insight on how to correctly use green shampoo, when to use and what to avoid. Here are a few of his tips: Editor’s tip: For those looking to banish unwanted orange and red tones, the L’Oréal Paris Le Color Gloss One Step In-Shower Toning Gloss in Clear can help to correct brassy, faded tones in colored or natural hair. Once a week, reach for this glossing treatment to help boost color, enhance shine and deeply condition strands for a vibrant finish that looks like you just left the salon. How Does Dark Envy Green Shampoo Differ From Total Results Brass Off Blue Shampoo & So Silver Purple Shampoo?

Nestled between products formulated by hair type or hair goal at your local beauty store, you can find shampoos and conditioners designed for specific hair colors. There are safe-for-all-color-treated options, plus purple shampoos meant to cure brassiness in blond hair and blue shampoos designed to add warmth to red hair, but there's been an absence of reliable options for color-treated brunettes looking to keep their hair color cool without making a trek to the salon. Until now. Finally, green shampoos are starting to enter the party. Dark Envy contains direct dyes that help neutralize red undertones in hair levels 1-4. Brass Off contains direct dyes that help neutralize orange undertones in hair levels 5-7. So Silver contains direct dyes that help neutralize yellow undertones in hair levels 8-10+."

Purple conditioners tend to be easier to find than blue or green conditioners but your toning shampoo should be more than enough to curb unwanted tones. After your toning shampoo, you’ll want to follow up with any hydrating conditioner for color-treated hair like the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Hyaluron Plump Hydrating Conditioner, Paraben-Free. Toning shampoos tend to be drying so this hydrating conditioner formulated with hyaluronic acid is just what your strands will crave after using one. Made specifically for lightened brunette hair, this sulfate-free shampoo deposits blue-violet pigments to reduce brassiness and counteract unwanted warm tones.

Toning shampoos work to neutralize unwanted undertones by depositing the complementary color of the color you are trying to get rid of. But the key here is that the complementary colors of orange and red are different. Apply blue shampoo to wet hair in the shower. Lather it around, focusing on the color-treated sections, and allow it to sit for three to five minutes. Then rinse it out and use a conditioner like you normally would. Some blue shampoos call for using gloves to avoid getting the color on your skin, but most will wash clean from your hands when you rinse your hair. Well, yes, color-depositing shampoos do indeed "work." However, before we can understand how, we need to dive into exactly what they are. "A color-depositing shampoo is a mild hair cleanser that contains color pigments," says Tardo. Think of it as a color toner in your shampoo—it can brighten, refresh, or neutralize hair color by depositing a surface layer of tone to your hair, he explains. The color pigment could fade for a number of reasons, explains Morgan: "Shampooing hair, salt, and chlorine water, environmental factors such as sun exposure, and/or using hot tools." And that’s where color-depositing shampoo comes in. Aside from oxidation, there are other things constantly at play when it comes to your hair, including environmental factors: the sun can work to fade your hair, and hard water, which holds tons of minerals, can latch onto hair and cause it to go brassy. Plus, the occasional dip in the swimming pool isn't exactly a win for your lengths, either. Of course, this is where a purple shampoo is vital to keeping you out of the stylist's chair every other week.I personally have only used it a few times with one of my brunette clients and can tell you it does make a subtle difference.
