Pair with your favourite Indian tonic water or maybe an elderflower infused tonic. Franklin & Sons Pineapple Mixer with Almond is a must try!

The Orkney Distillery and Visitor Centre has an accessible entrance from Ayre Road, accessible toilets and a lift to allow all visitors to reach the first floor. Spend the afternoon with us here at The Orkney Distillery. Our distiller will take you on a full tour to explore the process of making our Kirkjuvagr gins. You will then craft your own gin recipe under the guidance of our distiller, with over 30 botanicals to choose from. Having selected your individual botanicals, you will oversee your miniature still and distil your very own gin! Your spirit will be bottled with a personalised label for you to take home at the end of the day. Whilst you’re here you can enjoy complimentary Kirkjuvagr gin and tonics as well as nibbles from local food producers. We will end the day with a blind taste test to see which gin is the most popular! Their Johnsmas and Mikkelmas Gins which are named after midsummer and harvest time are lovingly steeped in seven times distilled spirit for long periods of time, then hand bottled, hand labelled and boxed. Their Rhubarb Old Tom Gin which was released in 2017 is also created this way. It is inspired by Orkney’s much celebrated rhubarb plants, which grow very well in the harsh climate. With vast quantities of chopped Scottish rhubarb steeped for several weeks, Rhubarb Old Tom gives that fresh zing which many gin enthusiasts enjoy.Founded in 2016, Kirkjuvagar Orkney Gin was established by Stephen and Aly Kemp, a husband and wife team based in Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney. Stephen and Aly had the idea of creating a spirit that connected the name and heritage of Kirkwall and Orkney with a product that could be seen worldwide and featured local Orcadian botanicals. Like many Scottish Gin brands, the couple initially worked with a Scottish mainland distillery that helped with the distillation and production. However, Stephen and Aly knew that one day the dream would be to open a distillery in Orkney where their gin and future products could be made. Stephen and Aly also knew that moving production to Orkney, it would be ideal if they could include any local Orcadian botanicals in their gin. We support the Scottish Government’s Zero Tolerance campaign towards drinking & driving, and recommend visitors who intend to consume alcohol arrive on foot, or by public transport. Please note: Aatta is a slightly larger 70cl bottle than our others, with a slightly higher percentage of 44%abv. You may notice the colour of the inside of your bottle magically change throughout the day. That's because the inner labelis cleverly iridescent, which means it has reflective colour changing properties, a bit like a mermaid actually! Out in the sunshine, it can appear bright blue, green and even pink and orange (depending on the time of day and colour of light) and indoors it can appear a very dark ominous blue. Sea Glass Gin takes you on a pleasurable sensory journey through warm spices, hints of citrus and of course juniper. A reflection of the Orkney Islands’ ever-changing seascape, which is also captured in our beautiful label. When creating Kirkjuvagr, on the shores of Kirkwall Bay, we thought it fitting to seek out a connection to our Viking ancestors that ran deeper than just our name. We then discovered a local legend that spoke of a variety of Angelica brought to the islands by Norsemen centuries ago, which can still be found growing wild today. Naturally, this very Angelica is now one of our defining ingredients, complementing a distinctive blend of local botanicals, including Ramanas Rose, Burnet Rose and Borage. Uniquely, we’ve also used traditional Orkney bere barley in our recipe.

Sea Glass Gin is our multi-award winning, Orkney gin. Released in Spring 2017, the result of much experimentation, to our friends delight – mostly!Reflecting the boldness of our Norse ancestors, the clarity of our seas and the purity of our air, Kirkjuvagr is a hand-crafted Orkney gin for the modern, discerning gin enthusiast. Flavoured with botanicals from the shores of Orkney and the Hudson bay, this true Spirit of Adventure recognises the deep historical links between the Orkney Islanders and the Northwest Passage. The tasteful bespoke bottle - designed in-house by company owner, Gary, and his daughter Erin -is based on traditional receptacles found on Orkney’s shores from times past. These bottles were made by family businesses like our own. Made to last, with intricate writing and company logos debossed into the clear glass itself. Much the same as these bottles, ourbusiness name ‘Orkney Spirits Limited’ is made into the stunning prism glassware of Aatta’s bottle and the dazzling glass stopper which matches the bevelled edges of the bottle supports a golden ‘selkie wife’ coin, oozing elegance, and class. Our quest is to earn Kirkjuvagr mythical status with gin drinkers around the world. We handcraft our gin in small batches using traditional copper stills in a process defined by passion, commitment and attention to detail. After all, the Vikings didn’t mess around. Nor do we.

In 2020, Orkney Spirits Limited released Scotland’s first ever Akvavit – Orkney Akvavit – a Scandinavian style distilled spirit inspired by Orkney’s Norse past. Each of Orkney Spirits Limited’s offerings are a must try, with smooth texture and quality from many distillations and vibrant flavour notable in the first sip. Their Orkney Akvavit is certainly worth a try even based on the fact it’s the first ever Scottish Akvavit made using the experience Orkney Spirits Limited have gained from the creation of their multi award winning gins. It is loved by countless Scandinavian Akvavit drinkers, and many of their gin drinking customers too. We invite you to enter our new distillery and visitor centre in Kirkwall, to toast the gods and learn the secrets behind our legendary Kirkjuvagr Orkney Gin.
