Most types of personal debt, such as credit cards and loans, are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The FCA monitors financial organisations and sets out rules and guidance on how they should treat their customers. The FCA’s Consumer Credit sourcebook (CONC) says that a lender must have clear policies in place for customers who are in arrears and particularly vulnerable. This includes customers who have ‘mental health difficulties’. We can influence pink flags by giving reassurance, educating appropriately to avoid unhelpful beliefs developing, and supporting and giving confidence in the planning process.
