Tropes:

So far as I am aware, Episode 4 ("At Night All Cats are Gray") was the only occasion during which Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee ever appeared together. For that reason alone this series is worth a look. CRIME FILMS from 1944 to 1966 including rare gems such as The Girl on the Pier with Veronica Hurst and the once lost short, Vacant Possession, with Brian Murphy and Daphne Heard. Sid James and Bonar Colleano star in Escape by Night and Boris Karloff investigates as Colonel March. A Deadly Affair: In "Death in Inner Space", a scientist discovers that his assistant is having an affair with his wife. He murders the assistant by sabotaging the breathing apparatus being used in a space flight simulation.

The first of these, aired as 'Hot Money', revolves around a bank robbery in which a clerk is incriminated. He follows the criminal to an office, where the money is seemingly stored. However, when the place is searched, the money has apparently disappeared. Despite the clerk being framed in the silliest of ways, the resolution is pretty decent, but nothing too special. Joan Sims appears here in an early role, and March reveals a John Steed-like umbrella sword! Boris Karloff in the persona of the eyed-patched, erudite March, offers three mysteries from his office in Scotland Yard, the Bureau of Queer Complaints. The Colonel March TV series premiered first in the United States from Dec. 1954 to Spring of 1955, with a total of 26 episodes. It was only broadcast on television in England in 1955 on Associated Television (ITV London, weekends), broadcast on 26 consecutive Saturday evenings from September 24, 1955 until March 17, 1956. [5] [6] From Camouflage to Criminal: In "The Headless Hat", the mysterious 'Monsieur Z' was a leader of La Résistance during WWII. However, when the war ended, rather than returning, Z stayed in the shadows and used their skills at organization and subterfuge to take control of the Marseilles underworld. Moustache de Plume: In "The Strange Event at Roman Falls", the wife of famous reclusive writer is accused of his murder after she reports him falling off the cliff near their home into the sea. However, it turns out the writer never existed at all. He was a male nom de plume created by the woman to allow her to publish her works and be taken seriously. However, after an old romance rekindled, she decided to fake the death of the fake husband to allow her to marry her love.

Boris Karloff and his wife Evelyn sailed to England in July, 1952, where Karloff filmed three different pilot episodes of the Colonel March series to show to British TV executives. In 1953, when the show was green lighted, Karloff returned to England to film 23 more episodes, making a total of 26 in all, then returned to Hollywood to film Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953). [5] [6] Plot [ edit ] Fresh Clue: In "Death in the Dressing Room", March feels the palm of the Body of the Week before it is moved, much to Inspector Ames' confusion. Later March reveals that her hand was bone dry and not covered in oil as it would have been if she had been dancing, meaning that she had been killed before the floor show and that someone else had taken her place. Compilation Movie: Colonel March Investigates is a 1953 British film consisting of the three pilot episodes of the TV series.

Some years ago, I worked my way through Thr Colonel March series, and for its time, I always felt it was somewhat ahead of its time, it really has that feeling of a 1950's American TV series, but of course it's set in The UK, with a largely British cast.In Britain, the series was initially evaluated in the larger context of the programming of the newly launched ITV. Critic Bernard Levin opined: "If there were only something of signifiant badness, then one could at least take a hatchet to it. But who could take a hatchet to Wilson, Keppel, and Betty, stars of Saturday night's variety programme, or to the adventures of 'Colonel March of Scotland Yard', the intellectual content of which is the nearest thing to a hole I have ever seen?" [4] List of episodes [ edit ] Episode [ clarification needed] La Résistance: In "The Headless Hat", March befriends Mrs. Sargent: an English widow living in France. She tells him that her late husband was part-French, and they were both members of the French Resistance. She also reveals that 'Monsieur Z', the head of the underworld in Marseilles, is a former Resistance leader, and she may be one of the only people to know him by sight.
