I still see that picture,” says Darling now. “They were just like goddesses to me. They looked bigger than life. And we just immediately bonded.” In her teen years, her parents brought the family to the US. “My dad didn’t like the Filipino culture,” she said. “He used to say ’Filipinos are so duplicitous.’ Did I really need to hear that?” Martoccio, Angie (March 23, 2021). June Millington says, “That part was kind of ignored, and that made it even worse. The terrible thing about racism is it can be so subtle. I knew I was being judged every second, so all I did was play as hard and as good as I could. I just knew I was representing something new.” a b Powers, Ann (February 14, 2018). Just who is Shinyribs? It’s a sprawling nine, sometimes 10-piece cast, but ultimately it is the funky brainchild of Kevin Russell, who grew up in Beaumont, TX and Shreveport, LA, the cradle of the swamp pop and bayou R&B sounds that drip off his fingers like honey and hot sauce. Think Gulf Coast meets Muscle Shoals with strong pop-song structures. Who is Cindy Alexander? Cindy Alexander is brilliant and multifaceted, like a prism in sunlight. She’s a songwriter, a singer, a storyteller. She’s a mother of twins and a daughter of mother nature. Fans of her music know she’s beautifully messy and heaven-sent. This award-winning artist has a cult following and an independent streak. Affectionately called “Pnut” by her fans, Alexander has a voice that defies her petite stature. In one moment, she hits rich and earthy lows; in the next, she adds the trill of a coloratura soprano. But technical prowess is hardly the headline: Alexander shares her entire being through music. “In art, we have to be vulnerable. Art is an open heart and a naked soul,” she attests. In 2016, Howard-Darling joined a live performance by her former Fanny bandmates June and Jean Millington. This inspired the formation of a new band called Fanny Walked the Earth. An album of all-new songs with the same title was released in March 2018. The album marks the first time June, Jean, and Brie all recorded at the same time in over 40 years. [13] [14] Cherie Currie and Brie Darling [ edit ] What follows is a tonal shift, complete with footage of Jean Millington’s slow, but steady recovery, visits from Howard-Darling and June Millington and nostalgia for what could have been. All of this builds up to an intimate concert performed by Fanny Walked the Earth to support Jean Millington’s stroke recovery fund. Jean Millington’s musician son Lee stepped in for her on the bass, but Jean Millington still joined them on stage to sing. In a touching moment on stage, Jean Millington cries as her son hits the bass, overwhelmed by the emotion on stage. A retrospective review of the group's career in Rebeat stressed that Fanny were simply a good band, irrespective of gender. [21] June has been praised for her guitar skills, and was described by Guitar Player as the hottest female guitar player in the music industry. [50] During her time in Fanny, she initially favored the Gibson ES-355 and Fender Twin Reverb amp, before acquiring a Gibson Les Paul Junior guitar and Traynor amplifiers. She used the Les Paul primarily for slide guitar playing. Jean's main instrument in Fanny was a 1963 Fender Precision Bass, which is still in her possession. [47] The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. After playing in several bands, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. The Millington sisters have continued to play music together since the split, and formed the spin-off group Fanny Walked The Earth in 2018. Sisters June and Jean Millington moved with their family from the Philippines to Sacramento, California, in 1961. They began to play music together on ukuleles, which helped them gain friends. In high school they formed an all-female band called the Svelts with June on guitar, Jean on bass, Addie Lee on guitar, and Brie Brandt on drums. Brandt left to get married and was later replaced by Alice de Buhr. [3]
