When we don’t get what we want, and when we want it, we sulk and consider ourselves doomed to the hells of failure, never to recover. Social media has become a powerful tool in modern society, in which we can extract positive and useful knowledge. However, the negative aspect of it is just as powerful. How we consume social media differs from one individual to another, and in many unfortunate cases, some users may be oblivious to the dangers which lurk in the virtual space. The extreme restriction of in-person social interactions has greatly triggered a wave of social anxiety among the youth, which is fostered and morphed behind their keyboards. Although social media has provided an appreciable platform for the youth to engage, debate and even express themselves, it has also distorted their ability to be socially active in the real world. But photographers are photographers. They can show the beauty of a melancholic face with their cameras. What about the rest of the world? Well, if you take a picture of yourself crying and look at it in the future when you are finally over the situation that caused this melancholy, you will feel so much relief because you will know that you made it. You were capable of going through emotional turbulence and still recovering from it. Therefore, I challenge you to also take pictures and become the photographer of your life even when you do not want to photograph it. We like to wallow in our self-pity when our imitation of influencers and celebrities, fail us because we assume they have discovered the secret to life and the hidden riches of this world. What is good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander, and what is normal to the spider is chaos to the ant.

From our appearances to our career choices, we’re constantly being judged, and at the end of the day, does it even matter? Not really. None of the people who are judging us are paying our bills, so why do we care so much?In light of the above, it is crucial to practice healthy consumption of social media content. Here are a few tips on how to consume content responsibly:

Happy pictures, sad generation is the phrase that springs to mind when one thinks of this. It has become a common façade amongst the youth to conceal their depression or other mental health issues with good news stories and picture-perfect moments on their social media timelines.

Finally, I interviewed Jesse Tiralla, a Calvert County Health Center social worker. Jesse says he comes (Photo: St. Bonaventure Univ.) Youth find importance within the existence of social media but, the difficulty that faces some of the youth lie in determining what is real and what is not. This very issue plays an integral role in instilling peer pressure amongst individuals. Focus on following the people who are in proximity to you because you have more chances of seeing how they live. And if we have asked and we do know, it’s probably because we are frustrated with what we have been given.
