Description

Kathy: There’s a couple of factors influencing the gin boom – one is the interest in provenance, quality and localism which was led by craft brewing. What’s happening in craft spirits is following that.

Brighton Ginis made with 100% organic grain spirit, juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed and milk thistle. Each bottle is filled, labelled and wax sealed by hand, the distinctive blue/green colour being that ofBrighton’s famous seafront railings. The light bulb moment was that (in my experience!) gin is the one drink that lets you get away with it. Brighton is a place that needs to get away with it on a frequent basis, and I thought ta da, the spirit of Brighton – Brighton needs its own gin. In true Brighton Gin tradition, each bottle is filled, waxed and labelled by hand, topped off with our distinctive wax seal, this time in Navy Blue. Brighton Gin is vegan certified, including the waxed bottle tops, and our distillation process also means it’s gluten free. What is navy gin? Having had great respect for what Kathy and her family and friends have achieved- for many years - it was a brilliant afternoon learning why this tiny team has achieved international award winning status! I want to express my gratitude to the Brighton Gin team for an enlightening and enjoyable evening. The hosts were exceptional, ensuring that all attendees were included and their needs were taken care of.It started with months of experimentationwith different ingredients, combinations, distilling techniques and approaches, and more than one or two accidents along the way (but we lived to tell the tale!) and lots of trying out recipes on fellow gin-loving friends until we finally hit the perfect blend.

Brighton Gin is made from 100% organic grain spirit, juniper, fresh orange and lime peel, locally-grown coriander seed, angelica and milk thistle, which is indigenous to the South Downs and renowned for its kindness to the liver function (albeit I have to legally say, most probably not when part of a gin!).

But more romantically, Brighton Gin is distilled in a pub in Brighton. Designed to capture the romance that is quintessentially Brighton, the Milk Thistle, even if it won’t cure/prevent your hangover, is native to the region of England from where it is distilled. #place Tasting Notes Kathy: Our initial vast list of botanicals has been whittled down to six, every one of which has earned its place in the bottle. We’ve created a gin that is smooth enough to be sipped neat and is certified vegan too, so it can be drunk with a clear conscience. Our early distillations were overwhelmingly strong and unbalanced and tasted like loo cleaner! We had a minor fire in the early days that needed to be patted out with my oven gloves, which then started smouldering themselves. My colleague Ellie then had a health and safety fit and rushed out to buy fire blankets and extinguishers! At the beginning we had a vast list of botanicals we wanted to use, but through the process of distilling and tasting them individually we whittled them down to our final recipe.

Here at Brighton Gin we run the tours ourselves! The same small team who work in the distillery all week also run the tours on Saturdays, which is just one of the things which make our tours so special! Due to this we can only do distillery tours on a small scale which means that any no-shows or last minute cancellations present a real issue for us. A mutual friend introduced Kathy to spirits specialist Helen Chesshire and together they enlisted the help of three other Brighton residents: Ian Barry, a laser physicist turned distiller, Jonathan Ray, drinks editor of the Spectator, and local entrepreneur Nigel Lambe. This cookie is used to a profile based on user's interest and display personalized ads to the users. But don’t just take our word for it – it won an Outstanding at the IWSC 2022, Gold at the Nordic Spirits Awards 2020, and the Craft Distilling Expo named it their Navy Gin of the Year! Kathy Caton: The idea for Brighton Gin came to me as an absolute light-bulb moment. I was out for a seafront run, the morning after a very late night on the gins (Plymouth Gin to be precise) dancing around a friend’s kitchen table – I got thinking that if I’d been drinking anything other than gin, I wouldn’t have been off my sofa, let alone going for a run!
