Description
The headband does a great job of distributing the headphone pressure. However, because it is made of vinyl, it does not adjust to sit on top of the head properly like real leather. However, I find no problem with this because the headphone is light and also comfortable. For people with large heads, the headband I think will not fit great, and the self-adjusting headband will also cause problems. Samson includes the option of disengaging the rubber tension bands that links the earcups to the headband. This should ease the pressure created. When it comes to treble, let’s just say that these headphones are… wonky. The entire region is exaggerated, making the low-highs sound harsh and the mid-highs piercing. Ergonomic qualities are of great importance to anyone who’s looking for a home studio headset. While both of these sets are great in this regard, we can’t help but notice that AKG K240 is, objectively, a better choice. Treble. There is a spike around 10kHz on the 850. I did find them to be pretty bright at times, and fairly essy sounding. Do note that this headphone will sound somewhat artificial in many instances. If you want the SR850 but need more low end thump and noise cancellation, go for the SR950. Who are the Samson SR850s best suited for?
Sibilants T and S will sure be a problem with these headphones, and we suggest either EQing them or trying a paper towel modification. Build quality 2.5 Sweet. Great comparison of 2 headphones I have been really on the fence about. Just a few things: you keep mentioning that since the 668Bs have a better timbre, the 850s would be suited for more modern stuff. Well considering I listen to alot of electronic music (like daft punk, anamanaguchi, dorian, 100 gecs, Lorde), I really appreciate hearing the details separated. So would you still say I should go for the 850s? I guess I have the excuse to get a new set of headphones, but I still don’t think my wife will be happy about it haha. In her perfect world, I should be happy to give her my headphones AND be headphoneless for the rest of time! Not gonna happen. Since Samson advertises these as studio monitors, they come with 3.5mm to 6.3mm gold-plated adapter. This is a headphone more for the budding audiophile who desires an overall balanced sound and tends to drink tea with their pinky out.
When I decided to buy our Samson SR850, I did so because I was on a tight budget. The extensive research lead me to them, and I can’t be more satisfied. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. Amp. Because the 850 is a bit louder, it really doesn’t need amplification, while the 668B could benefit from it but doesn’t require it. How to choose a headphone amp! Overall, AKG K240 covers the audible spectrum pretty well. There’s a mild “dip” from 1 kHz and up to about 7 kHz with some irregular “jumps” around 2.5 and 3 kHz. After the 7 kHz mark, it has a noticeable jump, providing a fair amount of high-ends. Sound Quality: Bottom LineAt the cost, I did not expect much about the SR850’s build and material quality. However, they are good and should last longer with proper care. The headphone is made almost out of plastic. The plastic quality is very low but they have surprisingly gone a few months without breaking. Speaking of breaking headphones, if you are someone who keeps breaking their headphones, we have an article here for someone like you.
Headphones don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, and the SR850 from Samson is a perfect example of quality on a budget. The sound profile is fantastic and more than enough for beginner producers. Neutral and transparent with a broad soundstage. The earcups are rather small though, and it is likely that your ears will press up against the drivers which can be a nuisance. Stability 3.0 In this duel, AKG K240 takes more points from us. This doesn’t mean that SR850 are bad headphones. In fact, they’re a worthy adversary to K240. But if you need that little extra boost to your home studio performance, K240 will get you there. Their sound quality, comfort, and overall features really show how AKG puts in the effort for their products within every price category. However, because the material can’t breathe, you get sweaty ears after an hour of use. We mainly played games on them, and we needed to take breaks once our ears began to ache. Although we can notice an old-school-style headband, the newer versions of these headphones have more noticeable colors. If you want to stand out and care about aesthatics, AKG K240 headphones are not a bad choice. Design: Bottom Line
Sound
Something I’ve also noticed is that instruments tend to sound more whole, with fully fleshed-out bass lines, as well as other instruments and vocals. Once in a while, a headphone comes along that costs minimal but hits way way way above its weight and into the realm of some much pricier competition. In this case, we have the SR-850 which has been “2p modded” and “cup clearance” to produce impressive open sound for audiophiles on a budget. Things seem to have more character; you’re able to get a sense of how the artist intended for the song to sound. Samson SR850 semi-open studio headphones might not be the most beautiful, but they sure sound incredible. They’re equipped with a pair of 50 mm drivers, which are accompanied by well-made acoustic chambers, a dispersion plate, and a velour earcup. Sure, this isn’t exactly a prestigious construction, but they’re fairly well-made for their price.
A cookie set by YouTube to measure bandwidth that determines whether the user gets the new or old player interface. Impedance. The impedance of each is different. 32 Ohm for the 850’s vs. 56 for the 668B. What is Headphone Impedance? This shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering that they are semi-open, so don’t be surprised when you can hear almost everything outside of the headphones. Experience total comfort. Thanks to soft velour earpads, you'll feel like your ears are getting a hug every time you listen. The adjustable headband keeps your cans close, even during the busiest sessions. You'll forget you're wearing headphones at all. The top-end response is one of the most common characteristics of studio headphones that brings with it the most conjecture. Or, in other words, how bright the headphones sound. While bright headphones are typical, are they any good? The answer is not cut and dry as with most studio-focused topics. On the open box, they come across a tad sibilant but do tame down after some burn-in, and this is further helped with the addition of the 2p mod, which involves taking off the name caps on the left and right side and gluing a 2p coin to each side. Essentially this is mass loading behind the drivers, thus reducing some resonance from the slightly thin plastic.
