Description

Rock in Rio is a recurring music festival held at the City of Rock (Cidade do Rock) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Irene, meanwhile, has resumed her singing career, at Roberto’s Café, where Dirk works as a bartender. Sentenced to a long prison term on Devil’s Island, he asks Dirk (Victor McLaglen), his inexplicably devoted valet and bodyguard, to look after Reynaud’s wife, Irene (Sigrid Gurie), hoping she’ll soon forget him. Both learn from each other, for Blu that there is a wider world and for Jewel that not all humans are bad.But formula does not have to be bad and when done right it can easily lead to an enjoyable film for all the family. When Blu, a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota, meets the fiercely independent Jewel, he takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro with the bird of his dreams. Born in Brooklyn but raised in Norway and other parts of Europe, she was dubbed “the Norwegian Garbo,” though her singing in Rio is rather more like sub-Marlene Dietrich.

After three successful festivals (1985, 1991, and 2001), they branched to other locations: Lisboa (Portugal), Madrid (Spain), and Las Vegas (USA). The animation of the parrots climbing is particularly well done and true to live to anyone who has ever own one.The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used except with the prior written permission of The Digital Bits, Inc. Rio is that film and shows that the Fox subsidiary Blue Sky Studios is growing from strength to strength. There she encounters alcoholic American engineer Bill Gregory (Robert Cummings), on an extended bender after a bridge he designed collapsed. The Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro is serving as the setting for two films being released this April: one being a full on action film, Fast and Furious 5, the other being a family animated adventure.

However, Darrieux didn’t like the script (with good reason), so eventually Sigrid Gurie took her place. Directed by John Brahm and starring Basil Rathbone, Rio (1939) is a crime melodrama that begins with some promise, but collapses utterly toward the end, with a climax that neatly wraps everything up according to Production Code guidelines. She made a big splash in Algiers and The Adventures of Marco Polo (both 1938, that latter also starring Rathbone), but made few films after, the best known being the interesting Three Faces West (1940) with John Wayne. The role of Irene had been earmarked for Danielle Darrieux, the great French star whose 80-year career stretched from 1931 to 2010, seven years before her death at 100. Rathbone plays Paul Reynaud, a Bernie Madoff-type Parisian financier arrested for embezzlement and forgery, causing a huge scandal in France’s banking industry and rampant personal bankruptcies among Paris’s millionaires, some of whom commit suicide. The animation itself has a similar look to Pixar's particular the human characters, though Túlio looks very similar to the main character in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. A Brazilian ornithologist, Túlio (Rodrigo Santoro) finds Linda and tells her that Blu is the last male of his species and takes them to Rio de Janeiro so the bird could breed.

Pop-culture references are toned down and there are a few musical numbers which is rare in CGI animated features. Much of the humour of the film is kid friendly slapstick as is expected from this type of film and it is done very well. Blu the Spix's Macaw's (Jesse Eisenberg) early life is tragic, having fledging from his nest too early and been kidnapped by poachers. It has a few interesting qualities, and Rathbone is good if theatrical in an unusual role, but the film is very minor and the video transfer unexpectedly below Universal’s average for black-and-white films of this vintage (for various Blu-ray labels). He then commits an act of violence so out of the blue—and, ultimately, one that serves no purpose at all—that it leaves the film nowhere to go from there. When their escape Blu and Jewel they try and reunite with Linda whilst avoiding being captured by the poachers and their insane cockatoo Nigel (Jemaine Clement). Rio is a pure formula picture and there are many elements have been in other films, such as Blu being taken from the wild as a chick, the animosity between Blu and Jewel and we all know where it is going to lead, the story of Nigel having a tragic past and being rejected, etc, etc…. But Blu does not hit it off with Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and matters get worst when poachers take the birds and chain them together. Compared to Hathaway she is a feisty, strong female character who wants to explore and distrusts humans. Its Production Code-mandated resolution so preordained, the script is forced into directions that neatly tie everything up but in the least interesting and satisfying way imaginable.
