Description

The Nokia 8.3 5G feels like a good phone that's arrived at the wrong time. It's impressive as many similar phones are, with good design, a nice display and plenty of power. But it's let down by a price that's high and a camera system that's not great. It certainly is worth using the Night mode in low contrast light, with the end results being a bit brighter. However, the overall quality of low light pictures is not quite to the same standard as those using the Night Sight mode of the Pixel 4a. There’s plenty to like about the 8.3 5G’s design and generous screen, but things fall flat in the camera department. Marketed as a quad-cam set-up (although that includes a 2MP depth sensor), it has a 64MP main camera, alongside a 12MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro counterparts. In bright lighting, the main camera’s shots (which we recommend setting to 16MP to save space) are decent, serving up perfectly usable pictures. The detail could be a bit better, however, and we’ve taken consistently better shots with the OnePlus Nord. The ultra-wide lens performs well, with minimal sacrifices made for the wider shot. If you take a lot of landscape or architectural photos, this should be your go-to lens.

Nokia 8.3 5G - idealo

The Nokia 8.3 5G is HMD Global’s first attempt at a cheap phone with 5G. It targets the same busy space as the Pixel 5 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro. Lens flare and ghosting is an issue when shooting directly towards the sun. Unless you like the distortion, it's probably best not to point the camera straight towards strong light.

That said, some regions are only getting specific devices. For example, those in the UK will only have access to 64GB while those in the US will have 128GB as an option.

We found the auto mode was capable of capturing nice-looking daytime shots in good lighting – you can see a variety of images in the camera samples section below. It’s easy to switch to the ultra-wide mode when you want to cram more into the frame, and image quality is similar to the main camera. You must have a 5G enabled device on the Vodafone 5G network, a Vodafone 5G plan and 5G coverage in the area that you are in. Coverage may be affected by a number of factors. Find out more about our 5G network The Nokia 8.3 comes in either a 6GB of RAM with 64GB of storage variant or 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. We’ve tested the 6GB of RAM version, and found it to work well but we’d recommend trying to go for the 128GB for that extra space if you can find it. As for the specifics, the Nokia 8.3 5G is priced higher than most of Nokia’s usual offerings, and it has suitably dynamic specifications to match. It uses a beefy Snapdragon 765G chipset for 5G connectivity and processing duties, as well as a choice of either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage, depending on how much you’re willing to spend.

As a piece of hardware it doesn’t have all the next generation bells and whistles seen on its competitors. Recent leaks confirm that Nokia 8.3 5G is headed to Russia, US, European markets and China too, it seems. HMD CPO Juho Sarvikas recently teased fans with a Nokia 8.3 5G video captured with another Nokia 8.3 5G. This video also revealed the variants TA-1243 and TA-1251. We’ve used 5G on the device in a couple of scenarios, and we found it to work well. We haven’t been able to properly put the 5G connectivity through its paces, but if you’re excited about the next-gen connectivity standard you should be well catered for by this phone. It costs you nothing, and we’ll ensure that the raw materials get reused. At the time of writing, Nokia is dangling another carrot, throwing in a pair of its Power Earbuds within the price of the phone. But the Nokia 8.3 5G is a strong handset overall, and it’s certainly worth considering if you’re looking for a phone that offers strong battery life, a large display and 5G connectivity. Nokia 8.3 5G release date and price With the standard f/1.9 lens and even the ultra wide f/2.2 lens, detail quality is consistent from centre to edges. In fact, the final pictures usually appear better than what you see on-screen in the camera app. If you put this phone alongside a top-end device from the likes of Samsung or Apple you’d likely notice the difference, but we found this to be a nice-looking screen, with vibrant colors and good contrast. In the real world, that puts it at close-to flagship performance, and we didn’t notice any slow-down or stutters in regular use, even in more demanding games. Crank up the quality settings in beautiful titles like Nimian Legends: Brightridge, however, and you’ll notice some slow-down and dropped frames, but nothing too drastic.

As for the display, the Nokia 8.3 5G is fitted with an IPS panel measuring 6.8in across the diagonal, with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 and a 20:9 aspect ratio. Despite not being an HDR-certified panel, the screen will upscale SDR content to a near-HDR format, using the same upscaling tech that was first introduced in the Nokia 8.1. Home Broadband: Monthly price will increase each April by the Consumer Price Index rate of inflation published in January that year, plus an additional 3.9%. See vodafone.co.uk/pricechanges for details. Pay MonthlyThe fixed focus macro lens (which is only available in the standard Photo mode) is much less useful. You need to hold the phone about 4cm from your subject which incurs distortion, plus resolution is low at 2MP. Overall, we've found it very difficult to capture any kind of macro image that we are pleased with. For Laptops / Tablets: lets you select a monthly Device Plan Credit Agreement (3-48 months) with a 24 month Data Plan. You can pay off your Device Plan early, and if you do, you can then keep your Data Plan on a 30-day contract or leave. If your Data Plan ends for any reason, you will need to keep on paying your monthly Device Plan (either in full or monthly) This comes with two key benefits. First, the phone’s software is untouched, meaning its completely free of bloatware, duplicate apps and UI changes. Second, because it ensures the phone will receive updates to newer versions of Android year-on-year, a key factor most companies struggle to deliver on at this price. Here's comparison images, one of the 64 megapixels Pro photo mode and the other is the standard 16 megapixels resolution. The Nokia 8.3 5G hits a lot of the features Nokia phones are known for: good value, a decent camera, and a clean software experience. If you want to get involved with 5G but want to spend as little money as possible, then this is a phone worth looking at.
