It's kind of how I imagine a high class casino would've smelled in the 70s, 80s and early 90s in Monte Carlo or elsewhere on the Cote d'Azur. To me this perfume smells extremely sexy, I love wearing this for everyday, but due to poor availability I have to keep it for special ocasions. The drydown as a skin scent lasts and projects 6/ 8 hours, is a lovely sweet vanilla with florals, balsamic woods and soft peppery cinnamon.

By all means, this is not your current flavor, but it isn't outdated and it IS worth owning despite the fact that this came out about 25 years ago. Cavallier manages to create a perfume in which amber, vanilla, and sweet resins intertwine perfectly with the spicy, astringent and fruity area of it. Sometimes I think they, the perfume manufacturers, must have to get their (raw) materials from the same places, 'cause the "flaws" are almost identical in the reformulated classics. Balsamic and gourmand, like a star on the red carpet, Opium attracts attention, obeys you but at the same time keeps you in respect. The opening is the best part for me, that blackcurrant and anise blend well and create a nice sexy, sort of oriental accord. After that disaster, all that chaos fades into a somewhat nice vanilla but it still tries to cling a bit to that wretched opening with the occasional whiff of gross mixed with vanilla. It would be a coupe of Creme de Cassis liqueur, with a generous layer of vanillic lightly whisked cream on top, decorated with a sprinkling of black pepper, one star anise, and a slice of ginger at the edge of the glass. But to new sniffers: just note that the newer version of the edt has much less longeviety than the original, vintage version.

When wearing this, me and the others around me notice the sweet vanilla and spicy anis which gives this fragrance an almost licorice type of vibe. But give it a bit and after about 10-15 min it starts to follow the opening and progression of the EDT albeit at a slower more prolonged pace, but still with a stronger black currant note which is much nicer once it takes a step back. I also find the smell quite vintage and a bit soapy, but soap for "men", like shaving cream, after shave or eau de cologne, but again according to my own olfactive memory.

Opium pour Homme in it's current state seems of higher quality than much of the other stuff I've tried in recent times! I think I like Gucci Envy for Men a bit more than Opium Pour Homme due to the "plasticky" balsom in Opium, and also maybe due to Envy having lavender (I'm a Fougere fan too). I thought that is something wrong with my skin, but I can see that some other reviewers have problem with longevity,as I do. I really don't care for the opening at all, I find something in it slightly pungent and displeasing. This is a beast of fragrance with so much depth and complexity and its just addictive and divine to smell. Projection is moderate so I usually spray 10 or more sprays to get a good coverage and project it out. However, if you do not have a problem with pepper or cedar, Opium is the dankest fragrance you can get.Compared with the EDT, it smells nicer, more rounded and noticeably different, however, the EDT lasted longer and projected better. Yves Saint Laurent was one of the most influential and respected fashion designers of the 20th century. Soft spices, a bit of blackcurrant and the cedar in the base (cedar is quite noticeable throughout). This is the first fragrance that I have blind-bought after reading the reviews written on Fragrantica.

it is on the name ( Opium ) and you need to try it once to understand why you will become addict to it . The scent is reminiscent of a very different time than now, a composition with ingredients that seem exotic and foreign. i have to remind you guys that this one is strong but i believe it doesnt slap you in the face cause of it warmth. Fresh spice notes begin to appear shortly after, from which springs forth a warmer, more resinous note. With that bit out of the way, this fragrance is something that a sophisticated gentleman would have worn on a night out in the late 90s, or possibly even as a signature scent. It probably projects for about an hour and you might still be able to sense it 4-5h later if you bury your nose on the actual spot where you sprayed it. Black currant laying on a bed made out of vanilla and balsam, biting on a galanga, no anise or pepper whatsoever. I've got a few sealed bottles of the edp a real deep beautiful and intense fragrance i bought a few years ago the edp that i have is far more potent deeper and much more intense than the edt which i also have. Follow-up review: the initial spray you'll smell the prominent blackcurrant note and pepper, the tolu baslam emerges only after the one hour mark. If Kouros is death by electric chair, Opium is death by a carcinogen slipped into your cocktail, only to realize the effect 5 years later with 2 weeks left to live.
