Description

By allowing gamers to swap among various presets while HDR is active, they could accidentally make the HDR image look worse in ways that they may not understand upfront.

The AW3423DQ is Dell’s latest gaming monitor in their Alienware line-up, but it’s not just any monitor, this is their first OLED monitor. Dell Corporation Limited is not a lender and only operates as a credit broker exclusively for PayPal Credit.

You can see the recommended OSD settings above, and then further corrections and mapping of the native wide gamut back to sRGB are taken care of at the profile level. In HDR, our 4K Costa Rica test footage (output at 1440p to match the monitor's native resolution) was very good, but it still took some tuning to get right. There is a bit of over-coverage in greens and reds still which results in a 110% relative coverage measurement. This is a result of the pretty decent clamping of the panels native wide gamut colour space back to sRGB, which you can see on the CIE diagram on the left. In SDR mode the luminance range of the screen is pretty decent, although it won’t get as high as many desktop monitors (commonly 350 – 450 cd/m 2 nowadays) if that is a particular requirement you have.

A major reason to go with the Alienware 34 over that model, though, is the same as for many OLEDs: The panel runs cool as heck by comparison, and it is about half the poundage, to boot. The Alienware 34 is built around Samsung's new QD-OLED panel tech, which you can read about in greater depth here. We didn't have the time to dig in this deep ourselves, and more control, in most cases, is usually a good thing. Weighed just as the panel, before you mount it to the stand, the Alienware 34 is easily the lightest curved ultrawide gaming monitor near its size that we've tested, at just 15. Experience ultra-low latency gameplay, support for HDR and cinematic color, plus smooth, tear-free gaming thanks to NVIDIA G-SYNC ULTIMATE certification.I have to offer a strong recommendation for this monitor, but I should also mention two further quirks of the unique screen tech: the screen could suffer from burn-in, although there are plenty of countermeasures and user habits to prevent this, and the text is not as crisp as most other displays due to a different subpixel structure. Also importantly Dell list a “flicker free” ComfortView screen which should mean no unnecessary flickering caused by OLED-protection features or the likes.

Dell Corporation Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, FRN 778776, with limited permission to act as a credit broker. If your package is delayed, the first thing you should do is check the tracking information to see if there are any updates on the status of your package. The Custom Color preset mode is the only one that gives you access to the individual RGB controls, so we used that for the calibration, although in the end they were set optimally at 100,100,100 anyway for the correct colour temp balance. Much has been made of the screen’s coating in early reviews and user reports, so we wanted to share our experience with the screen and thoughts on this topic. In it, various charges are run through the panel to "unstick" (note: we are really simplifying things there) any potentially problematic pixels.

Dell have instead combined an anti-reflective coating with the panel and the result is a semi-glossy appearance. For those of you wondering "what took so long" for OLED to make its move from TVs to monitors, it could be argued the main reason we haven't seen the same rate of rapid adoption for OLED on either laptops or PCs as on televisions, is because of the big bad B-word. Immerse yourself in a visual spectacle with 1000 nits peak brightness, an infinite contrast ratio, and VESA Display HDR True Black 400 certification. The screen remains very stable thanks to the sturdy and well built stand, with very little wobble at all. G2G response time spec and with OLED being well known for its near-instant response times this shouldn’t be unrealistic.
