An excellent story, told with empathy and understanding about issues that are often not talked about. Until reading this, I didn’t realise how much I needed to read about a character like this; a bit obsessive, a bit strange. Brought in an airport on New Year’s Day, I’d didn’t need a gruesome difficult thriller, and I certainly wasn’t given one! T J Emerson, author of The Perfect Holiday 'With her taut writing and immaculate pacing, Susan Elliot Wright has created a dark and sinister tale of toxic family relationships, full of secrets and lies, layered with a perfect example of the smothering isolation felt by so many new mothers.

Part of me was questioning whether or not Anna was behind all this, or if there was something else at play here. I was really really hoping for a twist that I hadn’t already guessed, but it never came so I was left feeling a little underwhelmed. Whilst I did enjoy this book, at times it felt a little predictable and was quite a sad tale of family secrets and a lot of tension. I wasn’t sure my heart could take more emotion, but it somehow managed it as Emily and Simon have a crucially important chat. Both Emily and Anna are complicated women who elicit feelings of sympathy, frustration and anger from the reader. The Flight of Cornelia Blackwood was published in 2019 to critical acclaim, appearing on a number of ‘best of’ lists that year.

There was no slowing down as Emily and Simon do what they need to do to put things right, to save what is left of their family. There is always something for the reader to think about, the urgency building as we sense something isn’t right. As much as I liked Anna at the start and no matter how much I thought she was good company for Emily, she slowly began to get on my nerves and had me thinking twice. The contract between Anna and Emily is very interesting and introduces some moral questions for the reader to consider.I knew this book would be good, but I didn’t realise how much I’d love it and how much it would take over my brain space! The author consistently kept my attention on the book, the questions starting to pile up in my mind. If you read something this excellent so early on, you just know the rest of the book will be a phenomenal read. I wasn’t convinced the surprises were over though, and as we revisited Anna’s perspective, I still had my doubts she’d leave things alone as she once again goes to extreme lengths to get her own way. After those few pages, I closed the book there and then for about 5 minutes to process it all and to ponder just how these events would link to the main story.
