The book tells the story of flamboyant company founder Alan McGee and the many great bands that recorded for the label, such as the Jesus and Mary Chain, the House of Love, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Primal Scream and Oasis. The Oasis bits aside - they're as tiresome to read about as they are to look at or listen to - this is a fitting overview of a label that played a significant role in defining the independent music scene in the UK from the 1980s onwards. Cavanagh’s book remains the definitive statement on British independent music in the late 20th century. David Cavanagh is the UK's most respected music journalist, and this book is a must for anyone interested in the music industry over the last two decades. Even when he gives brief praise to the album upon its release, the author can hardly complete a sentence about it without repeating the band's problems.
