Yellow Kite has acquired Aldo Kane's "inspirational" memoir Lessons From the Edge, following an eight-way auction. But before the battle-hardened Scot found fame for his telly escapades, he often felt like a failure after leaving behind his role as a Royal Marines sniper in 2003. Aldo saw active military service from Northern Ireland to the Middle East and became a survival expert in many environments.

In his book Lessons From the Edge: Inspirational Tales of Surviving, Thriving and Extreme Adventure, Aldo shared his jaw-dropping stories of how to survive and thrive through sheer strength of mind and sharp decision-making. Now the explorer, from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, has written a book about his adventures — and wants his amazing stories of survival to show that anyone can go from feeling worthless to becoming a world-beater. It’s the old commando adage of courage, determination, unselfishness and cheerfulness in the face of adversity. With an inquisitive mind and an extremely unique skill set, Aldo is well set up for hard-hitting investigative journalism missions. Like going out and climbing a mountain at the weekend isn’t actually that risky when you put all the mitigations into place. Join Aldo live in conversation, as he shares jaw-dropping stories from his life and career – whether it be abseiling into an erupting volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo, rowing the Atlantic, getting locked in a bunker for 10 days with zero daylight, or being held at gunpoint. The Times Magazine'Inspiring survival stories from Aldo Kane, the man behind Tom Hardy, Bear Grylls and Steve Backshall expeditions.

Bumbling through life without making any decisions, I feel it’s much riskier than people doing things people think are risky. Aldo joined the Royal Marine Commandos at the age of sixteen and went on to become one of the youngest Elite Commando Reconnaissance Snipers in the UK armed forces. So, we use our vast network of local contacts on the ground to help improve life through travel and make a positive impact, whether that’s through community empowerment projects, nature restoration, or disaster relief.

Aldo now runs Vertical Planet, a technical safety risk management company providing services for some of the world's largest TV and film productions. It meant spending six months at sea this year during trips to the Dominican Republic, the Azores and an ice edge near Svalbard, Norway.

It will reveal how this tough military man was able to cope with suddenly feeling worthless, how he overcame doors literally slamming in his face, how he came to realise that you can’t wait for things to happen and instead how he rediscovered his identity and harnessed his emotions to his advantage to find determination, purpose, and a renewed sense of belonging.
