When it comes to screws and bolts, there is a big difference between hand-tight torque and the torque that is required for proper installation. Hand-tight torque is the amount of force required to turn the screw or bolt by hand. This is usually not enough force to properly secure the fastener. The last method that can be used to calculate torque is to use angular momentum. This is found by taking the mass of the object and multiplied by the velocity. Once you have this number, you need to divide it by the radius of rotation. It is not possible to estimate torque without further information. When using a foot-pound torque wrench, it’s important to be aware of the conversion factor since most references will be in inch-pounds. For example, 80 ft-lbs is equal to 1,060 in-lbs. While nobody wants to spend a whole bunch for anything, this is one of those cases where the old saying “you get what you pay for” holds true. It’s not that the lower-cost tools won’t properly torque things down because they will, it’s that they won’t last quite as long. First, you’ll need to find the correct setting for your application. Most torque wrenches have multiple settings that can be adjusted depending on the size of the bolt or nut and the amount of force required. These wrenches are excellent for high-precision jobs where applying the right torque can mean the difference between proper functioning or catastrophic failure. Importance of Calibration While it’s not the lowest-priced torque wrench out there, it’s also extremely durable and high-quality. This means you won’t have to worry about replacing the torque wrench in a year or two and you know you’re getting reliable results every time you use it. The struggle here is it can be hard to read the raised numbers, especially if you’re wrenching in a poorly lit hotel room, or adjusting a saddle bolt upside down. It’s comfortable to use, but the hollow plastic construction certainly feels cheap and can lead to clearance issues in rare cases.
